Default Cutting Finger coals

When ever i cut finger coals I never get it just right and end up with jagged edges and the pieces are never quite even. Anyone have suggestions about how to do a better job?

I usually score the outside all the way around. I then hold onto the coal as close to the breaking point as I can and then snap them with force, but in a consistent manner, if that makes sense?

I never manage to cut the finger-coal in even pieces, too but even if you do, it doesnt really make any difference. I always put pieces with jagged edges, one double the size of the other, some times even bigger than my bowl and leave it hanging there.
As long as you move it around once in a while, you 'll be fine wih any size of coal. If you are a perfectionist... just try SamB's method, it works just fine.

how else to do it, saw through them with the miracle blades! haha i love those knives and if you have ever seen the infomercials how they say you can use it to cut through drywall or make a "cut" on solid steel and then use it to cook and it will still be just as sharp as they day you bought it. well that claim is entirely true and my dad put it through the test over the years when he bought the first miracle blades and they still cut beautifully today. we got a new set at the la county fair recently and i just love cutting through crap, coals are no problem to cut through.

when i dont have them i just use what samb said to do

Just use a small saw (think leatherman or pocket knife saws) to score the finger on each side. Actually, you only really need to score about 3/4 of the way around--leaving one side untouched seems to work better. Light your coals as normal and then when you need a small chunk, use your tongs to apply pressure to the scored area. Works like a charm... they are much more manageable unbroken when lit, and also much easier to break as desired.

I just use my crappy edge of my book shelf and break it like you would break a branch, i'm lazy and don't care about even pieces.

I score them with an old steak knife I don't use anymore, then break by hand. I'm thinking a cutting board & cleaver might work well too.
