Default First experience with Nakhla Zaghloul

I am currently smoking my first ever bowl of zaghloul, and while it's okay, I could use some help getting it perfect using the standard Egyptian bowl I have (I don't have a tombac bowl, unfortunately).

First, how I set it up. I mixed 1/4 tsp of Grandma's molasses with the black tombac as best as I could. Lightly sprinkled in the bowl, I kept the tobacco about 3mm or so from the foil, which I punched followng Hajo's directions. I set three CH nats on the bowl with a windcover for two minutes before dragging.

When I finally got any significant smoke, I tasted mostly something like the molasses I mixed in. I was expecting something along the lines of a fine cigar, but the entire session thus far has tasted more like barbeque sauce than anything else.

What am I doing wrong? Or am I doing everything right and this is how it's supposed to taste?

Typically I use 1/4 tsp of molasses and 1/4 tsp of glycerin mixed with 20-25g of Zaghloul. When you mix keep your fingers wet with running waterand mix throughly before apcking the bowl. You don't need and shouldn't use a tombac bowl withZaghloul since it's a black style moassel. As to what you should use i'd strongly recomend a vortex or funnel with a scali mod. Some people get great results with a super chief but i've never tried it. I have never gotten would results with a typical Egytian style bowl. Some people use 4 pieces of coal but normally 3 does it for me. While I get decent smoke I don't get huge clouds. What you will get is a lot of flavour but don't smoke it like it's SB. Take it slow and shallow.

Thanks Hajo. I didn't realize that you're supposed to mix equal parts molasses and glycerin. I broke my vortex a few days ago and promptly ordered two more, so I'll try it again when those come in.

What should I expect to compare the "correct" taste of the smoke to? Cigars?

Well black moassel is basically it's own thing so it doesn't taste like anything else. The taste is heavy, strong, spicy with a little sweetness and complicated.Don't hoover it unless you like being sick. Take it slow and shallow.

I love Zag, I smoke it in the standard Egyptian, no foil and three coals. :P that works for me....I think it tastes very similar to black Cavendish pipe tobacco.

from my experience it tastes like how unflavored nasal snuff smells. it is an interesting smoke, not something i would smoke every day but it is nice to have around and try and have some friends try it ( reminds me i need to have my pakistani friend try it when i go back to school)
