Default Harshness for no reason?

I was smoking some AF Plum with a mate yesterday and we were gettin really harsh smoke no matter what I did...I was using 3 coconaras, thick foil and the tobacco was packed a couple milimeters below the rim of the bowl. When it first started happening I took the coals off, purged it and replaced them in different positions...within seconds it was harsh again, so I repeated the procedure a couple times, even removed one of the coals...

Anyone know why this was? We ended up abandoning the bowl

It sounds like you had too much heat on it, next time when you remove the coals and purge, only replace it with one or two coals. AF is generally pretty moist, and is pretty damned difficult to burn. We just got some AF plum in, never had a problem with it. Next time, start off the bowl with 3 - 4 coals, then go down to two within 3 - 5 minutes. It could help

Actual harshness...I think it probably would have been ok if id left it at 2 coals...it was weird because i very rarely have any issues...with HH or HF i have none and theyre pretty damn dry...oh well probably just a once off!

I gauge whether its burning by looking and seeing if smoke is coming out of the bowl. Smoke should never come out of the bowl, at least for us wimpy westerners.

One thing most people forget about is your water level too. I have found .5 to .75 inch above the bottom of the down stem is perfect.

Only time I found harshness was when I had 2 coals on which produced too much heat. Now I just use one coal with my lid over top of my bowl & it's almost perfect.
