if we understood the nature of the allergy, we could say yes.

but as for now, i'd say no. dont risk it, its pressed coconut shell so it may not be worth it. use exoticas.

I'm allergic to coconuts, sounds like it's not nearly as bad as your buddy, but still. I use coconara's with no ill effects.

Most food allergens can be destroyed by cooking... It's possible that the allergens could be destroyed when the shells are turned into charcoal, which is mostly carbon... I mean, you are talking about a serious breakdown of component chemical structures here.

I think it would be okay... But I would try to ease him into it for saftey's sake. See if he can safely handle them, and if that's cool, see if he can be around it burning with no ill effect before smoking them.

Im pretty sure the oils from the coconut is the biggest reason for his allergies. It's worth a shot.

have him touch the coal before he smokes it and judge it from there?

im thinking inhaling it would be worse than touching, so experiment and go from there

Have some allergy medicine ready it's not worth risking the allergy attack.

Woah, really? Care to explain?

This had completely slipped my mind, but I do have a buddy with coconut allergies. I didn't even think the coals could cause such a negative reaction -

I really dont think it can, the chemical compounds change when under intense heat. plus the water filter. I wouldn't try it, but I wouldn't think it could do anything

What i have heard from survivorman....

First you should try to touch it, rub it on your arm, or outside of hands and watch for any irritation.

Next, try letting it touch your tounge. Not the coal itself, but the smoke. Dont inhale. Wait a minute or two for any irritation.

Next, try taking a small puff slightly inhaling.....chances are, if you can do this, and there are no signs of irritation on your arm tounge or mouth yet, then it is safe to use.

Absolutely do not. He will have an allergic reaction, even though they arent visible, all coals will give off fumes of some type some may taste some may not but that is still coconut and there obviously will be coconut fumes that will make it into his lungs.
