Default Getting more of a smoke test than flavour

Guys i tried my pipe again today and got more of a smoke flavour than anything else.

When you have finished your tabacco should it all be black as mine was black on top but pretty much the same as i put it in under that most of the way through

please help guys

if u upload some pics it would help.
anyway i think u are packing your bowl too much.
depending on what brand of flavour you got u pack the bowl diffrentley. . lightley sprinkel it in and fill it just under the rim. if u fill it past the rim the flavour burns too quick.

There are quite a few posts around with people asking about the same thing. I'd make sure your coals are in order (that you have good coals, aren't using too many, are putting them on the bowl properly, etc) and that your packing technique is good.

It could also be a dirty bowl like I had (the bowl is completely black in the part where you put the tobacco) and if that's the case get some steel wool and scrub it off.

This has happened to me a couple times. When I was using a phunnel, I didn't have enough heat and I didn't pack enough in so the tobacco wasn't releasing any flavor at all. The other was when in my impatience, I failed to let my coals ash over fully before putting them on the bowl. The coal taste was so strong that I gagged uncontrollably for a second. I don't put my coals on prematurely anymore...
