Default natural coals in fire pit..

hey all, im new to the boards and i have a question, i smoke outside with my friends most of the time and we have a fire pit going most of the time. i have always used quick lights and want to switch to natural coals. so is there a good way to light the natural coals using the fire pit so i dont loose them in the fire? thanks alot.

I think it would be hard, but it might be possible. You can always get a cheap blowtorch to light them.

Well, I think your question is can you use the "fire pit" ... which makes a lot of sense and is a great idea!

Now, how do you light your coals, without them getting mix up in the fire with the other coals!?

Here is my suggestion. How about taking a metal coat hanger and making a spiral out of it, then manufacture some type of handle onto that, long enough to set the spiral (with natural coals on it) down onto the coals in the pit, and once lit you can easily remove the coals/spiral from the pit!? Make sense?

OK, one more, buy a cast iron skillet at a garage sale / goodwill / etc. The cast iron skillet will conduct the heat from the coals in the pit, to the natural coals in the skillet! You will need a way to take the skillet out, some kind of long handle of some sort ..

So there is two ideas for ya, Hope that helps!

Cheers!

that coat hanger idea sounds awsome, but wont the heat from the fire make the whole hanger extremely hot?, i guess i could just use an oven mit.

You may have to use an oven mit ...

OR you could do something like make the spiral, and have a handle on it, made out of coat hanger or a combination of coat hanger and pipe. If that makes sense?

Like have the end of the hanger handle look like this "U" and of course the pipe would fit into it like this "O" ... in other words, connecting the male and female ends. You can use the pipe to lay the spiral w/ handle into the fire, then pull the pipe out (keeping it cool), then when the coals are ready just use the pipe "O" to go over the handle "U" and pull it out of the fire

Another thing, you may want to make the spiral concave a little, so that you don't drop any coals!

Cheers!
