Default terrible smoking sessions

Hey guys, today I just got my 500g of nakhla and al-fahker because I've heard good things about them... and it was just terrible. I own a MYA QT hookah and this is a reoccurring problem. I don't know what I am doing wrong. My general set up is usually the same. I take the hookah, put water in it to the appropriate levels, sometimes ice as well. I take the bowl, sprinkle tobacco in it. I've tried packing it full, putting a little bit, sprinkling, putting it below the rim, putting it above the rim, putting lots, putting little, whatever. I've tried lots of small holes, several decent sized holes, not very many small holes, w/e. I've tried one coal, two coals, one coal on the edge, two coals on the edge, with both golden and ******* quicklight coals. Either way, my result is the same. Low flavor, highly smokey but not necessarily harsh (I can suck it down easily enough without coughing, it just tastes like coal with a hint of strawberry). I can get big smoke, little smoke, w/e. But it doesn't taste like anything. What on EARTH am I doing wrong? Please help. Thanks in advance.

can you take pictures of your setup please?
which flavors of tobacco did you use?

nakhla and af produce lots of smoke easy, so seeing your setup would help

A pic would be good also what kind of bowl are you using. Most of bad taste I found comes from the wrong amount of heat but a pic would help lots also are you making sure you're coals are fully lit and all the chemcials have been burned off

I've tried using both phunnel and regular bowls... neither have had more success than the other.

Most phunnels take two directly accross from eachother. Trad clays a normal size take 1-1.5 coals but that also depends on the make of coals I forgot what u used. Also what kind of foil are you usin if its cheap thin stuff use two pieces if its heavy duty use 1. Nine outta ten times you're gonna get beter flavor outta a phunnel\vortex. Cause it keeps the jucies in and doesn't allow it to run down the stem

You didn't mention what kind of foil you are using. That might have something to do with it. Maybe try switching foils. Going to heavy duty if you're using thin, cheap stuff--or the other way around. Or using an extra piece or one less piece. Using a big enough piece to wrap the top of the bowl well so that you aren't getting air in from the sides?

For me, different shishas do better with different foil. And there are various techniques to wrapping it. Different things you can do with the foil.

Also, how are you storing your shisha? If you're putting it in the fridge, leaving it somewhere that is too hot, or not putting it an air tight container, you could be ruining it.

I'm using wal-mart brand foil, I think heavy duty, not sure. Should I use two pieces? I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks for the advice.

I personally hate AF strawberry. It consistently has just a smokey taste, not too enjoyable...

Good luck! I'll give you another tip. With some shishas, like AF, the more I get the coals up off the shisha the better. I learned to use two layers of HD foil and wrinkle them up good before wrapping the bowl (stole the idea from someone else). It won't droop, and it creates little hills for the coals to sit on. and you don't have to fuss as much with the whole tight as a drum thing. You still need to wrap the bowl well so air isn't coming in from the sides. Pull it tight enough that it's not drooping, but not so tight that you've smoothed out your wrinkles. To do it I lay one piece of foil on the other, crush them together from one direction, straighten it out a bit, then crush it together from the other direction. Then lay them on the bowl (shiny side down, as always) and wrap. Poke holes as usual and go for it.

This is one of the better tips I've tried in a long time.

It has been a great tip for me. I saw some girl do it on a review video and it was exactly what I needed. Hope it helps you too.

try poking as many holes as possible for the AF... i've learned that AF needs a little breathing room compared to a lot of other shishas... same thing with the nakhla... it helps get good smoke, but keep the shisha from getting too hot... and with the phunnel, when you punch your holes, make sure to punch all the way down to the bottom of the bowl, to get more air flow through the shisha
