Default Purpose of Trimetal

So recently I've been smoking my new hookah at this hookah bar about 20min from me and that's how I made all my friends ever since I moved to Sacramento. Last night this guy was commenting on my hookah and saying how beautiful it was. Then he says "I love the different metals on it, it keeps the stem cool". So after my 3 hour hookah session I was cleaning up and was holding the stem. Then I noticed that the top of the stem was pretty damn hot and the middle where the copper was is nice and cool. So is the purpose of Trimetal to keep the stem at a cool temp or just looks?

the reason it was hotter on top was because its closer to the heat source and the smoke is hotter on top than it is in the middle.. am i saying this right?

I know that but i forgot to mention that the copper part didn't get warm at all. Like it was completely different temp from the rest of the stem. From the part the copper starts to the top of the stem was completely hot. So the metal touching the copper was hot and didn't make the copper hot at all. It's hard to word... lol

I don't think it's just the copper that does it. I think it's the transition of one material to another. The conductive quality between the two metals is much less than that of a solid piece. I have a double pear and if I were to grab the top of the stem after a session it'd probably burn my hand, but below the first pear it's room temp. So I just believe it's because of the transition from one material to another.

Oh well the thing is that the copper was a bit cooler than room temp from what I remember. But I dunno it may just be the transition =P

Copper has a really high thermal conductivity, stainless steel doesn't. The heat of the air in the copper section would have transferred through the copper more than the heat of the air in the steel section.

well since copper is one of the best heat conductors out there, it will dissapate heat extremely quickly to its surrounding, so generaly it would always feel cooler, its mainly y its used in computers as its ability to stay cool is unrivaled.

I dunno weather the km's are designed in that way for such a use, my guess would be its purely aesthetic, but i guess km have stumbled upon something, quite clever to keep the smoke cooler without even realising!

I'd be kind of nervous to have one. It gets really humid here, and even metals that are close to each other on the galvanic table (which they might be, depending on the alloys KM uses) will corrode over time.

Really, wrapped steel holds heat longer, and its the top peice usually happens to be steel, because it looks better that way (having a copper accent peice) this works out for it on the heat though...as mentioned.

But if you have an all brass rig...like maybe syrian brass....youd notice this all the way through.
