Default balance of coals.

It seems like everytime I smoke, I some how end up burning the shisha, 1 coal isnt enough, 2 coals is to much. How to fix this?

Heat management can be tricky, but eventually you get the hang of it. Some tobaccos work better with certain techniques. One day you'll have that "aha!" moment, where it just clicks you get the perfect combination.

Definitely check out the How-to Video Section and watch the heat management vids. Those helped me out tremendously.

1 coal + a windcover or cut 2 coals in half and use 3 of the halves on the bowl.

What kind of bowl are you using btw?

I would try different methods then, try 1 coal cut in half + a windcover on and off every once and a while. Or just use 3 half pieces around the rim of the bowl. See what works best for you.

some tobaccos are easier to manage than others. every time i try a new brand i have to learn how to properly smoke it. one thing that makes it way easier for me is to always use heavy duty foil. i always burn my shisha with regular foil.

Also, make sure you are not smoking AL Fakher. The symptoms you stated are the exact symptoms of AF smoking.

if you have a really shallow egyptian bowl, and if your shisha is a dryer one, try overpacking it. sprinkle the shisha in the bowl to the rim, and add an equal amount on top of that. take your foil and wrap the bowl tightly, as usual. poke a lot of holes. the shisha will be touching, and you will see a slight bubble, but it will smoke fine. you do not need as much heat as a normal packing, so try one coal, leave it on about ten minutes, and gauge your smoke and shisha state and see if you need more heat. i know it seems crazy, but i do it for nakhla in my shallow mod and it works fine. dont know how it works for wetter tobacco though, or in deep bowls.... ill try that tonight

I tend to have the same problem. I will have to try the half coals thing. Sounds like the bowl i have is the same size.

did this last night with nakhla DA and it worked pretty well, kinda weird, just gota make sure to poke big holes through the tobacco

as to heat management make sure you keep you coals to the out side of the bowl, some times i even hang the coals off some if its getting to warm. another thing is that if your using nats the general practice is to flip them when you move them but that gives you more heat so you can just slide them too if heat is getting to be an issue

i decided to try this same overpacking method on my vortex bowl last nite (overkill, right?) I used el basha grape up above the rim, i guess about a quarter of an inch, packed really loosely. smoked oddly at first, nothing bad, but just not great, and then about 5 min into smoking, beautiful!

Using QLs they seem to be the only thing 'round town. And I cant be assed to spend 30 dollars on coals. But the cutting em in half method worked for about 10 minutes, then the peices were so small they burnt out quickly and i had to light more. Seems like I just need to invest in those coals I cant be assed to spend for :P
