Default I need help with large AF solid hookah please

Hi I've got a new Large AF solid hookah and noticed that some parts of the gold is peeling off and is silver underneath. It's very slight so not much if a problem at the moment but I'm worried how long it's gonna last. I checked CH website and it says the brass is plated gold so will my hookah turn silver if I polish it? Or is there anyway I can plate it myself?

I'm going to need to see this guy, cause the way plating normally works means that it shouldnt really peel off.

edit: fyi, i can polish my 28" w/o that issue...so i wanna see yours to know whats up.

Electroplating shouldn't 'peel'

Maybe peel is not the right word. Basically there's one or two scratches and the colour of the scratch is silver so it seems that the gold colour can be scratched off whereas my original nour may have a scratch here and there but the colour is gold through and through.

I can't get any pics now because it's night so my camera had to use the flash and because I need yo close up the flash ruins the shot. I'll take some pictures in the morning when there is natural light available

Electroplating certainly can and will peel if the preparation work prior to plating is subpar. Any oxidation layer allowed to form on the underlying nickel plate prior to gold plate can cause peeling.

The brass is technically nickel plated and then gold plated. Both are very thin layers so while it is possible to polish through the gold layer and expose the nickel, it may not yield good results. It is possible to replate specific areas by brush plating but gold plating solution is expensive and prep work for brush plating is more difficult than submersion plating. It also is more uneven and harder to match finishes. IMO it would be easier to get back down to brass and start over but if you want to replate only parts of it, the process is as follows:

-Polish and remove any scratches. It should be at the same level of the final finish you want.
-Rinse with distilled water.
-Degrease.
-Rinse with distilled water.
-Activate the old nickel and/or gold layer using sulphuric acid.
-Rinse with distilled water (it should pass a water break test at this point).
-Immediately brush plate the repair area.

If you decide to replate the entire piece you will need to disassemble the pieces. To do that you will need to unsolder the stem tube at the top connection. Use a torch as a soldering iron will not create enough heat as the brass dissipates it fairly quickly. After you've unsoldered the top piece, the rest should unthread as they aren't soldered together.

or you could just live with it and just try not to exacerbate the situation, no esoteric pun intended.

My 31" Al Nawras has chips in the nickel plating through which the brass is visible. I love it! Gives it character.

On my older version, the "natural brass" part of the stem is painted that way and kind of just dissolves over time, no peeling. There is silver-colored brass underneath.

My 36" has a lot of dings and scratches I was rather disappointed at first. However the more I use it the more I like it. The paint on my base is also very fail, one of the AF logo's (1of3) is entirely printed wrong and looks very sloppy.

I always thought the colour of my nour Syrian was just plain brass but now I realise that is plated aswell because I just noticed some if the plating on that has also come off and the actual brass which is more dull in colour can be seen underneath. I'm fact it's much worse than my AF but its harder to tell because the two colours are very similar.

I guess I just examined the new AF hookah too closely. BTW it smokes beautifully can't understand what other people have been saying about this hookah having a restricted pull.

the plain brass colors wont keep a resilient shine as well if it wasnt for that shiny plating i believe...then again i could be wrong.

my 3 year old syrian glyph is nickel plated and there are definitely a few areas where the brass is coming through.

one of my friends had that "gold tapped" km (nickel plated) and the whole thing is now basically brass.
