Default No, my Brass!

As a lot of you folks know, I am a big proponent of Syrian brass and Nour style hookahs. My main rig is the large AF solid, and it has been a great rig since the day i got it.

But here's the problem: the gold colored parts of the stem are coming off.

At first, I thought it was just some tarnish showing on the brass, so I figured I could polish it off later. As it got worse, I realized it is actually the gold paint apparently coming off.

My best guess is that its getting rubbed off because I transport my hookah a lot. Has anyone else had this happen, or does anyone have any suggestions on fixing the appearance?

i honestly wonder if the new batch was made with thinner plating...

the af was my daily smoker for a long while, and it started being one again recently, and its still fine. I clean my rigs after each use and sometimes before just to be sure

Plating is it...oh well, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something to damage it.

But you are all exactly right - it still smokes like a dream, and is in no danger of losing its spot as my top rig!

Thanks guys!

But that doesn't mean it's not brass. Still brass. Just with Gold paint. Probably lead based.

Oh, and I don't think it's plating.. I am sure they just painted the pieces, soldered them on the non-painted pieces and were on their merry way. These are hookahs guys, not ashton martins.

They are indeed plated brass. Nickel first and then gold. The stem pieces are threaded together, stem tube inserted, and soldered at the top threaded connection and at the bottom of the shank. Depending on how tightly the hookah was assembled, you can actually unthread the pieces slightly if you try hard enough but it is not recommended as it puts a lot of stress on the top soldered joint.

The plating is just very thin as is typical for decorative plating. Seeing as how gold plating solution is expensive, especially at the current time, it's a no brainer to assume the manufacturer will plate the gold as thinly as they can get away with considering how much they really are making these things for. How well the plating holds up isn't only a factor of how thick the layer is but more importantly how the hookah is prepped for plating and how contaminated their solutions and water and acid baths have become.

As PL said, it's simply a cosmetic issue. Your hookah isn't slowly commiting hookah-cide.

ON my AF nour the gold area isn't peeling, it' just coming off. no pieces, no flakes, it's just "receding" towards the middle. Fading is a better word.

It might not effect the performance of the hookah but it does leave a dour taste in the mouth because one of the main reason attractions of the AF hookah is it's looks and if your only concerned about how well it smokes then why not just get a standard KM
