Default got a quick question about heating coals

about the foil tent technique some of you guys use..

do you think i could use a wind cover instead of foil? think thats a bad idea?

i was just curious, cause i suck at making anything with foil (last tent i tried to make ended up become a giant ball... *sigh*)

Well the foil tent is supposed to be a temporary wind cover. So yeah go for it, if you had it the whole time you should have used it from the beginning

Oops I read the post but didnt real the title.. I thought you were talking about a tent of foil for around the bowl to act as a windcover.

Now that I see you are talking about heating coals, I wouldnt do it unless you have a backup windcover, I think it will eventually start to turn black from the heat, but if you dont mind that then I guess you can do it.

I never had to use my windcover since I got a coil burner so i'm not 100% sure what the outcome would be.

but his hot plate shuts off before the coals are even heated so, yes the coffee can thing is sweet and im sure it works amazing, but what if his hot plate shuts off before it heats the coals even with the coffee can?

I would say give the coffee can a go if you have one of those big things layin around, but if not honestly go to walgreens and that will be the best $10 you will ever spend

The foil is pretty much a ghetto wind cover. Temp till you get an actual one. And its cheap. Than again so is a actual wind cover so yeh.

You can use either. i recommend a real wind cover because it just works better

I use anything. Usually you can make a tray out of foil, or use a tin can to keep the heat in by plopping it on top of the burner. Don't use your wind cover because it will start to turn a weird metallic black. If your coals are only partially lit use that, though it will take some time for them to be ready. What kind of coals are you using?

Not sure if the can would be able to hold the heat.

I made a windcover with a monster BFC can and it gets way hot almost to the point where it seems like it cant take much more and thats just from two or three coals.

if you do ever finish your BFC windcover make sure to wrap some electrical tape or anything else that will help not burn your hand when you try to pick it up

but what might work is like an empty can of beans or any vegetable can (if you dont have the large empty can of coffee) cause the aluminum or metal or whatever is much thicker than a monster BFC can. Just make sure that all the paper around the outside is off of the can. you dont want to be startin any fires lol.

I always put my windcover on my stove.
It sort of stained the color of the silver but to be honest i think it looks kinda cool haha. Gives it some character.
