Default Shipping to Canada as "Gift", Consequences?

Hi everyone, especially Canadians

So as most of you know shipping to Canada is already cumbersome for most vendors in the US. The cheapest i've been able to find is 25$ flat at hookahstore.com and around the same price at hookah-shisha.com except they go by weight.
On top of shipping there is always the duties charge, this has prevented me from ever ordering shisa/tobacco from the US. I did some research and I believe it is currently 12.35 cents per gram of duties if you import tobacco.

I am not too sure if shisha counts, but that would be a killing on the wallet.

I know some vendors are fine with marking their shipments "as a gift" to Canadian customers, which I believe would allow the shipment to go through without duties.

I was just wondering, if they do realize that you purchased the shisha from a vendor, what would the consequences be?

Also, whoever else that has had experience ordering to Canada, let me know please!
25$ for 250g of AF is the best i've been able to find, i've even found myself paying 15$ for 50g of nakhla.

Thanks!

Well they can tax you for it if its over a certain weight even if its a gift. You can probably google it and find out what the limitation is for that weight of tobacco. If you ship a hookah there's no tax on that, but you can be sure as hell they're gonna open it if they see a hookah in the box through the x-ray.

The tax on Shisha is $30 per $10 value of shisha. The $12.35 per gram is for pipe tobacco. Shipping as a "GIFT" is really hit or miss. The best thing to do I find is to ask the vendor for NO INVOICE in the box and to never mark a total value above $50.00 which will keep you under the allowed "GIFT" limit for packages coming into Canada. When it comes to listing the items on the shipping slip just ask for them to mark the TOTAL dollar value for all Shisha in the box as no more than $10.00. I haven't had a problem in a long time since I learned exactly what customs is looking for. Also lastly any vendor that tells you they won’t do any of this for you, just move on because it is a good chance that they were flagged at the border for sending Tobacco across. There was a vendor I was using for about a year and then on my last order with them they called to let me know they couldn’t mark down my packages anymore and they had to start leaving the invoices in the boxes. They asked if I still wanted them to ship the order, and since I hadn’t had a problem in over a year I decided to risk it. A week later the package was at my door with a $300.00 bill on it.

well for the other neighbor of the states, shipping to mexico is pretty similar. While it might not be very helpful to tell you my side of the story, as long as they are marked as gifts, not a huge box, and the price lowered, then there shouldn't be any problem. But aren't there any arabian shops in Canada? Even in Mexico we can get Al Fakher and Nakhla 50g boxes for 3$.

I believe the weight limit for the commercial stuff is 1kg.
And to be honest I've done a whole lot of googling and researching around and there are very few shops that carry branded items that we hear aboutall over this forum.
Most of the shisha products are in middle eastern bakerys or meatshops that sell tobacco straight out of ziplock bags.
I know the hookah smoking market is quite large in Canada, just don't know why any entrepreneur hasn't jumped on the opportunity

edit: I also don't believe theres a online canadian hookah vendor either, that would solve all our problems =D

There are a few shops in Toronto that I know of that sell Shisha illegally. But the prices are awful. It’s always worth the risk to just import it.

- AF 250g $30.00 CAD
- Nakhla 250g $20.00 CAD
- AF 50g $13.00
- Nakhla 50g $12 - $15.00 CAD

Remember those are the under the counter special prices.

LOL I once had to ask for the Shisha and then come back in an hour to pick it up.

The reason is because the tax on Shisha is VERY high ($30 tax / $10 shisha). Shops that sell shisha legally have to sell it for around $60 - $80 / 250g box of Nakhla.

Haha I had to wait til the store was empty once to ask. Not fun.
However, I'll try to import the way you have, hopefully I have success!

Ps. it seems we can only get AF or Nakhla here =(

I think you will be ok, just don't go crazy on your orders. Keep them small, maybe 1kg - 2.5kg but I wouldn't do much more than that.

Let me know how it goes when your package comes in.

I live in Toronto, and I dont know how that works, never ordered =D
But I do know is if they do charge duties it can become ridiculous, then youd have to return the package and I believe you still have to pay for shipping.
WinBigLoseBig may know more since he has more experience with this.

i see, to be honest, i never had any problem, like i said Ive been ordering online from around the world and i hate only 1 duty fee once, was like 30$ and they never told me why, i bought a playstation game back then..

but for the hookahs coals and shisha, never. i hope AF still delivers their stuff with no problem..

what you can do is order from a site like hookah john, hookahstore or thehookah, take a small order like 1x 250g and 4-5x 50g
wait till you receive it, see how it goes and then order again with a bit more amount

but for my orders ill keep you updated

nice to hear that!

as for the illegal sale of the shisha, here in most middle east shops , if you know the guy a little bit, he can sell you a Nakhla DA 250g 10-15$ , 250g AF grape 25-30$

I don't usually order more than 500 to 750 grams at a time and no problems yet. I'm also in Halifax NS.

I just checked the tracking number on my two orders coming in. One is still on its way here and the other arrived this morning and cleared customs. Which means it should be at my door tomorrow and I will find out if it had any tax on it. I will keep you updated.
