Default Need help buying a coal burner!

I recently bought 40mm Belgian coals and thought they where QL but found out they're naturals. I would have tossed em to the side and went back to my ******* hookah QL's but after taking the time to light a coal I couldn't belive it... 2 HOURS WITHOUT A WINDCOVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the longest lasting coal I have ever had. I cant get a ******* hookah coal to last over 45 min, I would be lucky to get it over 35 min... but these Belgian coals are the most amazing thing I have ever had. Im still tring to process the cleansliness of the coal and came to the conclusion its just as clean tasting as anything else I have tried.

So now that I have these amazing coals I want to start using them but dont want to sit over the oven for 10 min trying to light them, ya they take a LONG time to light over a stovetop flame. So I was thinking of a coil burner or hot plate. I wondering what is the best one available. Price isn't a problem. Although it would be nice to keep it under $50 if possible. I just want something that heats up extremely fast (under 2 min) would be nice and can roast my coal in under 2 min after that. Any ideas everyone?

I went to Wal Mart and got a 15$ burner. Takes around 5 minutes till I flip it and burn the other side for about a minute. I usually set the burner and coals while setting up the hookah and loading the bowl etc.

Sounds pretty good. Im just curious who has what they think is the best coal burner and how fast it heats up. If everyone chimes in with what they have and how fast it heats up then I can have faith in what burner is best for me and my extreme impatience. lol

you are going to get quite a few suggestions telling you to go to walgreens. here, ill start.

go to walgreens. the single coil burner is about ten bucks.

as far as one being better than the other, im really not buying into it. if you see one that looks better than others and want to spend the extra scratch....go for it. as far as functionality goes, its an electric burner...how different can they be.

i use a normal gas cooker as i cant get a coil burner in the UK, but they are plenty of other threads where this has been discussed and coal burner is what everyone recommends, hot plates dont burn hot enough for the coals to get done quickly

Hot plates are not hot enough to lite the coals, and usually there is a protection system in them which shut them down if they get too hot (so it will shut down because of the hot coals on it). Just get a single coil burner from where the guys say and you will be happy.

Wall greens, I got my single coil for 9 buks. Or, if you want something that you can take with you anywhere. Buy a single burner camping stove. Meaning the small individual ones that use the gas fuel, not the propane. It costs like 45 bucks, but they work great.

if you're really worried about getting it done quick, why not just use a butane lighter?

butane lighter would not make lighting a nat coal quick by any means.

If it's more of a torch-style lighter it should.

I bought my Coleman single burner for $30 and the propane bottles run a little over $2. Even with daily use, a bottle would last me a month. Over time, I'd say that setup could save you money even over the coil burner.

Burner here. Bummer is the 7-10 min coco wait. Think I'll make a burner cover/tube thing to concentrate heat. Think I can get that down by half.

Edit: Ugly, how long do cocos take for you?

I put my coals on my Walgreen's burner and then while they are heating up I get everything else setup. By the time I'm done, they're done. I don't see why it matters how fast they light, as long as they get fully lit.

I use Exoticas (cut into 1/3's) and it takes around 4-5 minutes. I've never really timed it. I'll try and remember to do that on my next bowl.

it doesnt take that long on the coil burner on high. Takes maybe 5 min at the most. Thats setup time. Then at the 30-40 min mark i usually put another set of coals on.

Okay, just timed it. Two 1/3 pieces of Exotica on the gas burner covered with my coffee can wind cover.
Three minutes on one side -- flipped 180 degrees -- one minute on the other.
Total time: 4 minutes.

I have a 40 dollar HUGE butane torch lighter. It cooks any quick light from start to ashing in 15-20 seconds top. But those belgian coals are a beast of there own and seem to be completely resistant to heat. I spent almost 10 minutes to get the last belgian coal lit and it still needed about 5 minutes of chain smoking under a wind cover to get completely lit(which suprisingly unlike every other Natural coal Ive tasted, this one is the cleanest burning) Lighting this coal from my torch would take forever, trust me. lol So Im seriously thinking about picking up the coil burner from wallgreens, question is though, does the 40mm disc type coals have enough surface to light them without burning them on the walgreens coil burner?

WILL THE COAL HEAT UP EVENLY OR WILL THE COAL ONLY HEAT UP ON THE AREAS THAT ARE IN CONTACT WITH THE COIL?

the coals will take about 3-5 mins depending on how beefy your coil burner is, thats teh total heat time, after 5 mins the whole coals should be lit without you having to move it around,

short answer, no, the whole coal will light not just the area touching.

I use Exoticas and usually let them ash the whole way up to where just the very top is black and then I flip them. I leave them on there for another 30-45 seconds then they're ready to go. I never check to see how long it takes but maybe I will tonight just to see.
