Default Very VERY Gross

Hey, I had to write about this. I bought a hookah from a lounge that is closing down. The amount of built up black crap in it was so bad, I had to say something. I don't have photos. But it took 1 hour to clean just the bowl stem with every chemical known to God.

The build up was so bad, it turned a vinnegar bath and brush green over that hour's span. Eventually, I gave up. Ran out of time to clean this thing.

But here's the clincher, what really gets me, is patrons of this guys lounge were smoking this thing.

If you dropped parts of your stem into vinnegar and it turned green, wouldn't you have a problem smoking it? Well, folks its sad to think people at this lounge were smoking this thing unknowingly. Trusting the lounge owner had basic sanitary practices.

This is not to say that this is typical of all lounges, as I'm sure it's not. But for some lounge out there to think that this was okay, I have a problem with it!

Just saying, be aware. That's all. Screw thinking about minor quantities of nitrosamines and CO, im certain this crap built into a CAKE in the stem is way more toxic or unhealthy at the least.

Just gross.

Wow, good to know. I'm thinking about checking out one of our local lounges that's been advertising hookahs on craigslist. The lounge itself has gotten some sketchy reviews, I'll know to be more cautious now. Thanks!

I agree but as a guy that knows his metals I must add a couple of things. NEVER soak ure stuf in vinegar! it is acid! I used it to get rust of old blacksmithing tools. Also - brass and copper rust green - so it wasn;t filth - it was brass corrosion which is not that bad. . .brass will always have a film of corrosion on it that seals its surface and prevents further decay. Also the steel used to make stems can be thin so you dont want acid holes in it.

All you have to do to clean the hell out of your stem is brush it - soak it in piping hot water containing baking soda and dish soap - brush and repeat till you can look thru it and see a shiny surface.

NEVER use second hand hoses!

i know people buy used hookahs from other usres and that's ok, but from a lounge just seems like too many miles. what kind did you get and how much was it? some hookahs clean easier while others may not be worth cleaning.

Phew. That's gross.

Hookah lounges, at least in the Washington DC area, are pretty much all kind of seedy. I wouldn't feel comfortable smoking in them. I did visit an incredible lounge at Hells Kitchen in New York though.

Had a similar experience when I took over managing a lounge in Tempe. The original owner sold it and it spent months in decline. By the time I started, the BOTTLES all had a thick green buildup on the glass. I spent a lot of time scrubbing all of them out. Railed on the staff about it too.

I was also the first brilliant guy who came up with the idea of sanitizing the mouthpeices of the hoses. Honestly. It was gross.

The hookah was a MYA QT and I agree, at some point it isn't worth it, and I reached mine. I could go back to cleaning it today and I'd still make green water. It's purely for display and spare parts now Lesson learned.

I agree totally about vinegar being an etcher. I stopped using it for anything related to cleaning brass shells (bullets) as it eats the copper in brass and weakens the casing neck and base web over time. Diluted it works well and a soda base will stop the reaction. But in the case of this hookah, it was a last resort as an hour of scrubbing and .. yeah it got old fast.

Again, lesson learned!

Couldn't agree more. If a group of friends pitch in a little money up front, it's easy to recreate the benefits of a hookah lounge in your own home and save a LOT of money.

Nicer hookah lounges usually seem to charge $20 - $30 for four people, and more if you want to keep burning coals. That adds up quick, especially when you start buying drinks. I mean, seriously, hasn't anyone heard of a liquor store?

As far as I know, brass doesn't rust, it oxidizes.

and rust is iron OXIDE - same thing - Brass and copper-containing alloys have a small film of oxide that prevents further decay. An acid like vinegar (acetic acid) goes right thru that and eats away at the brass thus producing a green substance. There are few tobbaco products that contain that much green coloring so it's not from the gunk it's from the metal. Use hot water and baking soda to soften gunk build-up and render the hookah odorless. Use vinegar to displace rust on thick sheet steel hookah.

This is just a driving factor for me to not ever go to a hookah lounge and stay home and smoke mine. Plus i can go to a corner store, and buy some booze or whatever, and have that to drink, and make food. Ah the comforts of home.

Agreed. I can count the number of times I've been to a hookah lounge in the past four years since I've had my first hookah. Usually it's only when friends went to go, or if I am out of town. Now that I have my KM (with an incoming Narbish), I don't know if I'll ever go back!
