Depends on the coals, what are you using?

Depends on what you are using as tobacco more than anything. Some types are far more heat resistant.

With CH natural coals, I normally use 3 and use the windcover when needed.

Yea I use 2 CH Quick Lites and a ghetto foil windcover. I have to do some heat management with it here and there and remove the windcover once in awhile. I personally can't see myself using 3 coals cause it sometimes get harsh on mine with 2 coals when I have my cover on and without my cover I am just getting enough heat with medium to small clouds. just IMO.

I use 2 CH QL's on both glazed clay and pirex vortex. No windcover. And it gets pretty good sized clouds. I smoke tangiers though so ya.

I use two coconut coals with my Vortex bowl. you can see a vid of it here, this is after the coals have dwindled down to about 60% of original size when fully lit (if that makes sense, they were on this bowl for about 20 minutes while I was doing the review)

Jas, with starbuzz i use three natural coals and a windcover, and it never gets harsh. Use the three coals and dont let the tobacco touch the coals and it will be fine. I love my vortex bowl.
