Default was this a mistake? plus some beginner's questions

so i lived in germany last year as an exchange student and fell in love with shisha. almost half the population of where i lived was turkish, so there were lots of shisha bars and many people had them in their houses. i had never seen one in south carolina where i live, so when i saw one i bought it immediately and wanted to show my friends.

i'm having second thoughts now. does this look like a bad hookah? it doesn't look like the ones i used in germany or the ones i see online (plus it seems small). i'm slapping myself for not looking on the internet and just buying it!

and then with the top unscrewed.
is this where i put the water? how much?
i'm kind of confused..i've never set my own up, and all the videos and instruction pages i've found are for the typical looking hookahs. anyone have experience with this kind?

another stupid question. my stove has the linoleum things over the burners. can i still use it to heat up the coal? can i buy the coal in a store like walmart and the tobacco in any gas station or tobacco store? do i need a mouth piece and if so, where can i get it?

haha sorry for so many questions..from an experienced smoker, but inexperienced owner
thanks

First off, welcome to the forums! From the looks of it (in my opinion) that doesn't seem like a solid rig to have... You might want to shop and research around for some quality manufacturers of different hookahs. There's a crap load of different good choices out there, you just have to put a little time into researching it. Check out the review section for some detailed reviews on the well known brands as well as rare brands.

You'll also find many reviews on diffrent shisha brands as well as coals. I've found that most, if not all, of a begginers questions can be answered there by reading throughout that section. You don't want to buy tobacco from a store or gas station. That will not be the same type of tobacco that is supposed to be used for hookah smoking. Try looking through this site www.hookah-shisha.com and also www.socialsmoke.com

That should get you started on looking through some quality shisha, hookahs, and coals. Social Smoke also has a great section where they explain how to choose the right shisha and hookah for you. Hookah-shisha also has a wonderful FAQ section as well... After looking through all of that as well as the review section on this forum, if you have any more questions, fell free to ask...

hmm this is the kind of hookah that if I saw I wouldn't buy.

first of all because of the desiugn but that might be more personal preference than anything.
Then you have the small size hookah and short hose. Was this what you were looking for?
Also it appears not to have a glass vase which makes it VERY difficult to determine what water level to use.

You should have about 1/2inch to an inch of water above the bottom of the down stem. How in the world will you determine that level is beyond me.

how to determine the level is easy, unscrew it from the base and put it beside the base, from there you can get a close estimate on where the stem goes when its screwed in and go above that about half an inch and BOOM your good on that. great thing is that the hookah will last forever, as long as it does not leak it will smoke fine. dont buy another one until your absolutely certain that one wont work as you want it to. i have seen ones at a few smoke shops made completly from brass and almost bought them a few times but never have yet.

you cant use that stove to heat up coals, you need an open coil heater so look for one at walmart, target or even nazarhookah.com or for a gas one hookah-shisha.com. you can get bulk coal in quite a few places as long as its 100% natural bulk charcoal. do not use something like kingsford but the bulk coal i said before will work fine. best bet i would say is order online some good coals like exotica coals. if you have a middle eastern grocery store nearby you can get coals there and tobacco. if you got a smokeshop and they have a hookah in there 98% chance they will have charcoal and tobacco but it will be a bit expensive. a mouthpiece is not needed, its used at hookah bars so you dont spread something between people.

Thanks everyone! I bought a 22" starter hookah I found on ebay for about $50 after shipping. It's got the tobacco, coals, mouthpieces, everything. I figure when that comes in I can try both of them out and decide which I like better.

I live in a small town about half an hour from Columbia, almost 2 hours from Charleston. I'm thinking of going to College of Charleston next year though..best town in South Carolina by far. Are there hookah bars in downtown Charleston?

That , unfortunately, may be your second mistake.

not all ebay hookah's are great, quite a few of them are chinese crap which will leak to no end when you try and smoke. although some on there are good but not many.

The MAIN reason why I posted the above links, is so you could look through some QUALITY stuff...boomhauer's right, most of the e-bay crap is just that, crap! Once again, go to the links I posted above, and research and look through some quality stuff...For $50 you could've purchased yourself an outstanding hookah. E-bay is more of a shot in the dark in regards to wether the hookah is good or not...Like I said before, most if not all your questions can be answered by looking through the review section as wells as the FAQ and help section of the two sites above. If you would've taken the time to read through these web pages, you wouldn't have purchased an e-bay hookah (which more often than not ends up being junk)...

there are two, one is really posh and is 21+/dress code required. the other one is much more student-friendly, but as a result, there are lots of idiots there. the guy who owns it is really nice and pretty cool though. that's where i get my shisha and coals.

im at CofC, so if you end up down there, let's meet and greet!

I would strongly urge everyone to stay away from ebay. I wrote a article about the reasons a while back which covers all the issues with ebay. I would also never even think about getting any rig from tobacco imports because they carry nothing but Chinese junk. In any case, if you plan on having a rig worth owning plan on spending no less then 70USD.

In terms of what to buy go for a Syrian from jandrhookahs.com, www.socialsmoke.com or www.furathookahs.com. I can also recommend Khalil Mamoun rigs from www.pimpyourhookah.com and www.www.hookah-life.com . Stick with something 26" or bigger.
