Default New Narghile Stuff in Yemen

As some of you know I have been away on various business trips for some time and haven't seen my home in a couple of months. While most of my time away has been stressful and extremely unpleasant (ex. having to supervise the firing of a few hundred people and seeing some guy get hit by a truck and having his blood all over me) I have had some good times as well.

In Yemen I have been spending time the cities of Ta'izz and Mocha with a charming gentleman that is a major coffee and narghile connoisseur that happens to have the largest cache of Shooting Star I have ever seen. Anyway, despite is love of traditional moassel he is, oddly enough, dedicated to modern narghiles. I got to try out for only the second time a Shisha Art narghile from France which is propane powered and I found it a delight to use despite it's super modernistic styling and design.

I also got to see this strange German/Austrian narghile called "the unit 2.0" which can be bought here: http://www.smokinghookahs.com/theunit.html . Although it looked very well made and the hose seemed very well designed I have some doubts about it. Basically, I donít like the fact that you need to use the bowl it comes with and I donít like that itís made of aluminum. Has anyone actually tried one of these out?

Anyway, itís pretty neat to see and try new stuff in an area I would least expect it.

The first thing I notice is that it pretty much requires quicklights. No bueno.

Damn. That's pretty cool looking. The base has a Erlenmeyer flask look and the stem is very modern with the cooling fins. I agree with thefaded though on the quicklights issue.

Well technically you could use any coal that would fit. That includes coconut coals. I am not a fan of any hookah that forces me to use a certain bowl.

Here you go BP: http://s281.photobucket.com/albums/kk230/HFlettner/

Basically it works very well, as well as many narghile of about 20" can. It's a great invention with no real draw backs.

It's strange that my generious, old fashioned host has a love for such mod gizmos.

I don't think I'd ever use either of those, the propane powered one looks like an espresso machine and the other like something out of a chemistry lab...no thank you.

I admit that the propane powered deal looks crazy but the construction is first class and it works great. The only difference I noticed from a normal narghile in terms of function was the lack of ash.

I assume that there was no taste of gas as I suspect it does not use a direct flame but rather a propane heated plate like a propane soldering iron or curling iron.

I doubt you had enough experience with it to tell but how do you think the rate of propane consumption is? It seems like it could get more costly than coals.

I agree that it is a bit odd that someone so fixated on tradition would be interested in products that have pulled so far away from the traditional. Perhaps it's a matter of efficiency and function.

Yes I too found it interesting that my host has such a complicated sense of aesthetics as such a thing is very rare and basically unique amongst elderly Arabic men. He's a very eclectic fellow in love with esoterica.

As to the propane rig I didn't taste anything other then the moassel. The is not direct but it heats a stainless steel vessel that holds the foil *** with moassel.

Apparently the little tank is good for about 6 hours which means that a normal session for me would cost about $2 in fuel. Of course propane is cheaper in the states so i'd guess you'd spend about $1-1.5 per session depending upon where you buy the fuel and how much at a time.

As to "the unit 2.0" I didn't try but it looked very well built, super tight and for the most part well thought out. What I don't like is the absence of an ashtray, the use of aluminum and the lack of a purge valve.
