Default Apple Thoughts and Nahkla DA

Let me start by saying that I, like 95% of the vocal HPers, love Nahkla DA (which I decided to start referring to as NDA) but as I was smoking my lovely bowl of NDA last night a few questions came to mind:

Why the anise? Why is this flavor so universally present in apple moassel? What kind of apples are they eating in the middle east that taste like licorice?? How did NDA come to evolve into what it is? (with the anise) because I don't know of any nahkla pre-dating DA that's just 'apple' or just 'double apple' without anise, HOW DID THEY DECIDE APPLE ALONE WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH!?!? Isn't that like salting your dinner before you taste it? These are the questions my friends... these are the questions...

There's no answer to this question other than the Egyptians (apparently) started getting bored of just apple, so they decided to spice their apple flavors, and anise ended up being the most popular "spiced" apple flavor. So they liked the Original Apple, but wanted more.

Take AF Apple, their single apple is more a cinnamon spice but the spice still overpowers the apple.

Also, I don't think Nakhla even makes a straight apple flavor. Single Apple has anise from what I have tried, Esk. Apple (like all esk. apples) has a floral taste. So plain apple isn't even in the Nakhla lineup.

How about Nakhla Apple. That came about before the Double Apple and it does not have the anise flavor. Only Double Apple has the anise flavor.

Other than anise being really popular in the Middle East I don't know what it has to do with apples. It sure does taste good though so who cares how it came about! After the Apple flavor became popular, the makers of Nakhla probably decided to mix anise into it and call it Double Apple since it sounds better than Anise Apple.

I believe apples and anise (the licorice taste) are both native to the eastern Mediterranean and Asia. My best guess is that when creating flavors since Apple is not a very powerful flavor (especially before synthetic flavorings)and anise being a popular and common spice in that region, somebody decided to mix the two.

i'm with zensilk... single apple Nahkla is anise loaded too, haven't tried AF single apple, but AF two apples is like smoke straight anise through a licorice hose...

solid theory hm1988... but its still weird to me that no one tries harder to produce a 'pure apple' flavor...

Almost all apple flavors have some sort of spice to them however the anise is really kicked up with the Double Apple. What I was trying to say is that Nakhla Apple is closer to an apple taste that the Double Apple. Most Nakhla flavors are not very natural anyway so you hardly get the real fruit taste out of them. They are more candy-like.

I'll agree with the single apple having less anise than NDA for sure... as for candy-like, I gotta say thats the first time I've heard anyone say that about nahkla... what moassel do you consider to have a natural flavor george?

Its become tradition and if it isn't broke then don't fix it. People like it, its the most popular flavor around the world, why would they try and change it? Like I said before apple is a relatively weak flavor, they use the juice as the base for many other juices, it needs something added to. I don't think a pure apple would taste very good, kinda bland. Even in cooking with an Apple pie you really don't taste the fruit, its mostly the spices that give it the flavor.

yeah that's very true. Salloum Bahreny apple (egyptian apple) is the best spiced apple flavor I have had yet, and the apple flavor is very strong, the anise is a background flavor but cinnamon is also present. There's a plain Yellow Apple flavor (Tangiers), but I have yet to try a red apple flavor that is spiceless, which I would think would be fantastic.

+10, plain red apple would be awesome. Even better would be plain Fuji apple, it would be so sweet and refreshing!

So far I have to just say El Hennyway DA is my fave. I got a 50g of NDA and the flavor was exactly the same but it wore out about 3/4 of the way through the bowl, whereas the EH stayed flavorful until the coals were cold.

I guess that most people (including me) like Nakhla DA because it tastes good, not because they want something that tastes like Apple.

I bought a 250g pack of Nakhla single apple and it's basically black licorice in tobacco form... DISLIKE. Now it sits in the corner to be smoked when throwing a party and i dont wanna bring out the good stuff cause i feel like burning off 25g's of the stuff.

i lived in egypt from 2005 to 2007, and i pretty much only smoked double apple during this time. the tobacco never had anise in it at that time. now, i live in qatar, and every time i have tried apple here, it has anise. did you guys have anise in your DA a few years back, because over here it seems to be a recent thing.

are you sure it was double apple?
i can still remember the great sweet syrian apple tobaccos in cafes lacking the licorice and those that had it as well, however it was always tafahtayn (2 apples) that had the anise.

honestly the DA is twice as good as eskandarani apple...so the name fits lol
