Default Tangiers Phunnel bowl... impressed, i am not

i just got a tangiers small phunnel bowl... so far not impressed in the least. The main problem is the funnel constantly gets clogged with foil. i have used the binder clip mod, and it worked well, but i got the 15 dollar tangiers bowl so i wouldnt have to deal with stuff like that. The only time i can get the foil to stop sucking into the funnel is if i poke a lot of holes, so many that i get weak clouds and a burnt top layer of shisha. You also have to get the foil perfectly tight, cuz if you dont the slightest slack will restrict airflow. a regular bowl or a vortex is much better than this, unless, after all the stuff i did to get this bowl to not be a pita, i am doing something wrong.

Are you using regular foil? I use HD without that little mod and it never sags. Maybe try that?

Do you have an original tangiers or a "havana" one? (alias... a chinese one)

Because the chinese have the spire higher than the original tangiers one.

i use reynolds hd foil, and its a tangiers small. idk if this is a big deal, but the spire in the middle is uneven. Half of it is just about even with the rim of the bowl, while the other half seems to be the right height. ive read that the tangiers funnels are supposed the have the center spire a little lower than the outside rim of the bowl.

That makes logical sense. If the spire is higher than it's closer to the foil and more likely to clog and restrict airflow.

the problem is.. you are putting the foil on to loosely... what you can do is get a paper clip and take off the metal pieces and put it in the middle.. that will deffinately save the day

those clips

or you can just wrap the foil tighter

To be frank I have been smoking from a Tangiers small funnel for a long time and have never had an issue with foil being pulled into the spire. I use basic foil and a single layer. It really comes down to technique. If you don't use enough foil to cover the top of the bowl and the sides of the bowl then the foil may be pulled down by the air flow.

If you still have problems even doing that then use two layers. It will allow for better heat control and make it less likely to be affected by the draw.

ive done the binder clip mod, and as ive said it worked well, but is a pita when you buy a new bowl and automatically HAVE to mod it. i will try to make sure the foil is tucked under the sides of the bowl, and reply with results soon. btw, does anyone have any tried and true hole patterns?

I use both HD or regular foil, depending on what i think I need. A couple things I do to help prevent sag: I make sure to use a big enough piece of foil so that I can wrap it around the bowl stem so it gets a good grip. I also use a tip of Kalutika's, smear some tobacco juice around the rim. This helps seal the bowl and kinda glues the foil to the edge. Also, make sure whatever you use to poke the holes is sharp so that it doesn't pull on the foil and finally, re-tighten the foil after poking the holes.
One last thing, check out this video if you haven't already seen it. It shows Eric, the guy that invented the bowl, packing Tangier's. The thing I noticed is he pokes holes right in the center. (Fast forward to about 4:30) Can't suck down that way!

Mine is concentric circles until I get just around the spire. Usually three or four rings depending on the tobacco. Tangiers is as many rings as i can fit. nothing over the center.

Try wrapping electrical tape over the foil around the stem of the bowl.

Keeping your foil tight is key to having a good session with a Tangiers bowl. If you are still having issues a couple small holes over the spire will keep the foil from being sucked down.
Make sure your foil is tight when you make your holes and after your done poking the holes, go around the bowl again to retighten the foil sometimes just the pressure of putting holes will loosen it a bit.

never had this problem either, but tangiers bowls are all hand made so they will differ. sounds like you just got a crappy bowl.

A phunnel owner myself, I must agree to most of these posts in saying I really haven't had a problem either. The first time I tried it out I did, but like everyone is saying, make sure the foil is tight and mine wasn't. When you are ready to cover with foil, your type of foil really shouldn't matter much. As long as you wrap tight, poke the holes, make sure it's still tight, and I'll use electric tape wrapped around the bottom of the bowl. I don't have to poke holes in the center when I do this

I would not recommend this. The adhesive residue on the bowl will be a pain to clean off.

I have never had an issue with adhesive residue being on the bowl. If there ever is any, its really loose and can be wiped off with a paper towel.

You could try overpacking the phunnel a bit...

Huh. Just smoked a bowl of HH tobacco, the wimpiest, limpest, most compressed tiny cut tobacco on the market out of a small phunnel with no mod and had one of the greatest 2.5 hr sessions of my life.

Oh, for the record, I was using HD foil, as I always do. That's probably your problem.

Oh, I would say kalutika nailed it on the head. That sounds exactly right.
