Default For those of you who use Exotica Coals...

I finally recieved my free sample of the Exotica Coals. So I'm excited to try them, but I've got one problem. Unfortunately, I don't have an old fashioned stove(with exposed coils). I have the new type with the black glass surface. I'm scared to try and light them on this type of surface.

I'm afraid I might permanently damage it. Also it's a pain in the ass to keep clean so I don't want to risk it. Is there any other way I could light these coals without having to buy a portable stove. I don't want to spend money on that. I once heard something about a heat plate. I'm assuming it's basically the same thing as a cooking ***? So if I were to place a cooking *** on top of my stove and turn up the heat, would it light these coals? Any other alternatives?

Could you just throw a frying pan on the stove, then the coals on the pan?

So you're saying I can just grab a cooking *** or frying pan, turn up the heat, and it'll do the same as if it were in direct contact with a red hot coil? I was under the impression that it had to be in direct contact to a red hot coil in order to properly light...

My suggestion for you is the following:

Go to Walgreens and get an electric stove. $9.99 for 1 stove or $18.99 for double electric stove. Those work the best.

Go with Gabriel's suggestion above .. the $9.99 hot plate. OR wait and see what sammniamii has to say? I have seen peple put them right on the glass with no problem, but I want confirmation from someone else first before recommending that. The other option would be a cheap pan that is seamless on the bottom.

Let us know what you decide?

Cheers!

YOur hotplate is absolutetly fine. It wont be damaged at all and they'll light in less that 5 min. I've used that for finger coals before and works a wonder. Doesnt get dirty or anything just wipe the asp off it and you are done.
Those are the best for lighting finger coals.'

it depends on the age of the glasstop - no joke. I've seen them used directly ontop, but now I've heard a horror story about an older stove that a "formed" stick coal shattered when attempting to heat. Some of the newer coals get VERY hot, and since it's such a small area of heat, it may be more than certain tops can handle.

I have myself, to see if it will work, used a cheap Dollar store frying pan (stay away from the teflon coated ones) to heat the coals. It worked with the naturals and QL's, although it took longer to get them up & running. About 6-10 mins, but it worked.

If your worried about the glass top, either purchase a cheap frying pan or the $10 electric coil stove. Either one will last a good bit and the second one is portable to boot.

I think I'll give the frying pan idea a try. If it doesn't come out right, then I'll buy the $10 electric stove. I didn't know they were that cheap! I thought they were expensive like the one on hookah-shisha for $60 This is why I wasn't intereted in buying a stove. But if it's only $10, then I don't see why not. Thanks for the help everybody! I will update this thread when I try it out and post my results...

I know it's just my opinion, but I would just get the $10 stove, that way you know it'll work.

Yeah... my advice is just go ahead and do it. Those stoves actually work really well, and I used one for about 6 months of daily smoking with no negative consequences whatsoever... think about it... if it couldn't handle the heat, then it wouldn't be a stovetop

The single coil burners are where it's at! I use one for my Exotica's and it works great.

I can't find any portable electric stove for $10 I've looked through Target, Walmart, Google, and even Amazon, but no luck. The cheapest I've found is $12.99 plus shipping here http://www.amazon.com/Proctor-Silex-..._tdp_sv_edpp_i

I'm a little skeptical about that one cause it's so cheap. I don't want to buy something unreliable. What do you guys think of it?

I also found another one at Target which is more expensive, but seems of higher quality http://www.target.com/Toastess-Porta...5Fstove&page=1

Which one would you guys pick? Another thing, is that it needs to be strong and durable. I'm constantly smoking outdoors moving my things from one place to the other. So the potential for abuse is there. I don't want to buy something that's gonna break on me...

Not all items are on the online sites for walmart and target ... so you may want to check the actual store.

Yeah, I actually tried that already... I went personally to Walmart, and they didn't have a single one like the ones posted above. They only had big ones that were double burners (unecessary). I actually found more variety online...

Go to ebay, they have several stores there that sell these things for bargains. Also, check garage sales, flea markets, or just your normal walmarts or targets. Nazar has some on his site as well as HS. Lots of options. When Im at work, I use one I bought from walmart...it was really cheap and it has worked quite well for me to be honest. No complaints!
