Default Funnel Bowl w/o Mod

Is it smoke-able? I was planning on heading down to PB today to grab a Funnel Bowl, but I dont smoke Tangiers, basically only starbuzz. Can I use a funnel bowl with no mod for starbuzz? What is the point of the mod?

yes you can. I use the phunnel without mod sometimes. Smokes good and taste great and still get thick clouds. A lot of people don't use the mod with the phunnel.
Mod helps save shisha and also re directs the draw through the shisha which some say adds more flavor

it is a mod that goes in the phunnel. I dont have a pic on this PC to show you but i am pretty sure someone will explain a little better.

The mod is this pictured and described here http://mnhookahs.com/product_info.php?products_id=73

I find it very useful in preventing the foil from being sucked into the hole in the phunnel. Also, it prevents the coals from moving towards the center and touching. This happened to me once when I didn't use the mod, and needless to say, I was pretty annoyed throughout the session because I had to keep on spreading the coals apart from each other every few hits...

I own a medium Funnel and have yet to use the mod. It works just fine, the taste might not be as strong, but it is there versus a regular bowl. I might pick up a mod when I order out for another box of coals.

you can smoke any tobacco very easily without a mod, i have tried it with and without a mod and i find little to no difference so i do not use a mod. to prevent the foil getting sucked over the hole you just poke one release hole over the middle hole it not get sucked down and block it. also as for the coils moving down to the middle of the foil i have never had that problem except when using nour coals before because they are round. never had that with jap coals, exoticas, or natural coals. just keep your foil very tight when putting it on and a hole in the middle to release the foil and your hookah should smoke fine.

Do Funnel bowls generally have an edge up against regular ceramic bowls?
I just dont like my mod bowl, its too wide, and im looking for something a little different.

a funnel bowl is wider than a mod bowl so if you dont like the wideness of the mod you may not like a funnel.

I agree with boomhauer on this one... even the smallest tangier funnel is still big.

Yeah, i agree with Boom and Ray, it is pretty large, but perfect for a 1 hour session with up to 8 people.

Youc an smoke without the mod in place, without Tang tobacco, but there is a MUCH higher chance of burning because washed shisha doesn't take alot of heat very well. And when the shisha cannot touch the foil, the purpose of the phunnel without a Mod is defeated.

Without the mod I normally keep and 1/8th inch to 3/16 inch gap between the shisha and foil.

But you will need a hole in the middle of the foil over the large hole to keep airflow.

if you use heavy duty foil  and stretch it tight the foil wont ever sag down, even if the coals get too close to the center. i have never had a problem with the foil touching.

if you have that problem just twist a piece of foil into an inch long piece, and fold it to a "v" and bend the legs at the top so it looks like _/\_ (upside down, the only way i could figure it out lol)  and drop the pointy part into the middle hole. you can even bend up the very tips of the flat parts sticking out of the hole so that it will hold the foil up higher.

as for saving shisha.. dont buy such a huge bowl to begin with lol

My dense Exoticas cause the shisha to cover the hole though... . But they are totally worth a hole in the middle. Well, this new batch i got at least.

I use my funnel bowl w/o a mod all the time. Usually if I want to save shisha I just use the mod as it does take up a lot of space on a small funnel bowl. However, the funnel can still work well w/o the mod. Just make sure you put the foil shiny side down really really tight. No wrinkles haha , it has to be very tight. And then do your basic two concentric hole pattern and work from there!

The Mod is usually for helping maintain an even amount of heat to the shisha and saves shisha too if you look at it like that. But definitely , you can smoke w/o a mod.

I had a small phunnel and no mod. I sold the bowl because I couldn't get it to smoke at all.

Yikes, not getting a phunnel to smoke... I don;t see that happening.
but i'm sure there is a reasonable explanation.
The only things that work better in Standard bowls are Nakhla and HH/HF tobacco. They are generally dryer, and the point of the phunnel is to catch the juices in the bottom. HH and HF and Nakhla does in fact last longer in a Super Chief or Phunnel then in a Standard bowl in my opinion.

I keep a Standard Mya around for Nakhla or HH, when i feel like it of course.

I never use a mod on the funnel and I use the funnel for 98% of my smokes. Never really had a problem with it functioning either.
