Default AF Tastes Burnt

I'm smoking AF from a phunnel bowl. It smokes great for about the first 45 minutes. Then a burnt taste starts to emerge. When I take the tin foil off though, there is still probably 75% moist, flavorful shisha left.

The heat is managed carefully, so it's not getting harsh. It's like, once the top layer is done, it produces a burnt flavor that overpowers the unused stuff beneath it. I don't have this problem with any other brand. Tangiers will literally smoke for five or six hours before losing flavor. And SB and Nakhla, even Pharaohs will take another set of coals or two before the flavor dissipates. But AF only seems to have one set of coals in it.

Is there something I could do differently to get more flavor out of this?

You might want to try not packing it so densely. If the heat can't get to the lower layers through the burnt top layer, then you won't get any of the flavor that's not burnt. Are you poking the holes thru the foil all the way down into the shisha? This can also help a lot.

Yeah, it's already packed really loose. Like, even looser than my better judgement would recommend. But I'll try poking the holes all the way through the shisha and see how that works.

I've only smoked one AF flavor in my phunnel (grenadine) but I packed it just a bit looser then I would tangiers, pushed it down to make sure there was a space between the shisha and foil and made sure to poke the holes all the way through - it turned out great.

make sure you're packing it below the rim of the bowl. You might have shisha touching the foil which would cause the burnt taste

I always pack my AF a bit tighter than normal shisha. I pack it like I would Nakhla. I fill the bowl to the rim and just lightly push it all back down so it is level just below the rim. It seems to work really well for me. You may want to give it a shot. AF and nakhla are the only 2 I pack this way.

Idk how your hole pattern is, but if you have too many with a funnel, the amount air pressure exerted through each hole will be less, causing the air to only reach a certain depth. In the case of too many holes, the hot air will focus mostly on the top layer of shisha, applying to much heat to one area over the entire session. if you poke less holes, the result will be an airflow that reaches forcefully down to the bottom of the bowl, through all the shisha, and up through the funnel. keep the shisha loose (except for tangiers), making sure it has enough airflow to the bottom of the bowl. This will result in unprecedented flavor and smoothness of smoke. You may likely need less heat. Because of the large opening of the funnel in the funnel bowl, one will not need as many holes. make sure, though, that the holes are spaced to allow an even flow of air from each coal, such as the three ring pattern, with the rings closer together, or a lot of really tiny holes as with a needle.

That happends to me aswell with AF on my medium and large phunnels..

This might not work for you because of different packing techniques and so on, but what i do, is pop on a windcover, and just letting it sit for 5-10 minutes, without taking drags.

What this (in my theory, atleast) does, is heat up the entire bowl, instead of just the top layer. Not sure if that what is really happening, but it seems to work for me.

Try it out!

Edit:

I forgot to mention, when the harsh/burnt taste starts to appear, i take of alle coals, and purge/drag like a madman (without coals on).. and then i put them on again, and then the windcover without taking drags.

I need to clarify. It's not harsh. It's only the burnt flavor. As far as smoke is concerned, it's smooth as ever to smoke.

Well, that could be the reason as well..

Al Fakher is not really a long-lasting shisha.

Could be the problem, but there's still clearly unused shisha in the bottom of the bowl. still smells flaovorful and everything. Hasn't even lost it's color.

well i know not everyone is an AF fan but you can easily get it to last just as long if not longer than Tangiers when you know how to pack it. i personally have smoked a head of AF over the course of three days. i packed it super tight, yes tighter than tangiers, and it seemed to work well. you just have to get use to moving the coals every so often. its not that AF sucks its everyone has to learn the way that they need to pack it. just keep trying. if all esle fails, use a small egyptian and just repack when its cashed. maybe alittle more work but alot less wasted shisha in your case
