Default smoke thickness help

The Pipe:

KM 34" Tri-Metal
Caravan hose
water and ice in the base
3 shishaco coals
1 layer foil

The Problem:

Vortex bowl: thin, wispy smoke. quick loss of flavor
Hole pattern is 3 rings of holes

Egyptian clay bowl: Thick, dense clouds. Great flavor that outlasts the coals.
hole pattern is like you would cut a pie

The Solution:

What kind of shisha do you use?

I'm thinking you packed the vortex to tight or you made too much holes in the aluminium foil.

Try packing the vortex fluffier than you would an egyptian, otherwise air only circulates through the top layer of shisha near the holes. I've found that my vortex takes much more heat to get going, so try an extra coal or two with a windcover (even foil works if you don't have a fancy one).

my experience with my phunnel has lead me to believe that the amount of heat required to get good smoke is almost double that of a more typical bowl. Try additional coals or poking less holes in the center of the foil.

I would say that everything your doing is right. What I do is set the coals on the bowl and then put a windcover on for about 5-10 minutes without smoking. Once the bowl has heated up then the bowl will smoke good.

Give it a try and let us kno because I believe its just a heat management problem. Iv found that with the phunnel its much easier to get smoke.

4 coals on Al Fakher in a vortex? haha, that thing is meant to save you coal, not make you sue double the amount. I use 2 coals on all my tobacco in my phunnel, a vortex should not need more than that.

It sounds like these are the problems:
1) AF Sucks.
2) Your Vortex Sucks
3) You might need a windcover

I don't use a vortex, but in all my experience I have to second the comments about heat management.

i smoke inside normally so i think it helps my clouds, i pack fluffier as well, windcover at times but i get great clouds imo. what type of shisha are you packing in both? also r you ashing your coals enough? because even if you have 3 coals if your not ashing them enough your not gunna get that direct heat your looking for. i try to ash around every 5-10 mins. make sure your penetrating the foil well because after u punch the foil the foil sometimes flips back up. the other thing ive noticed with my vortex is that it gets clog'd easier than egyptians so you really have to work to clean it. >_< i know its super basic stuff but every little thing is soo critical in smoking ive found

if its not your vortex who's setting up your rig?

o one other thing i forgot to ask. r you getting too much water in your base (i mean with the ice? when it dissolves into water does it fill your base alot further because ive seen where that happens when i put alot of ice in my base and it decreases my smoke)

i always loosely pack my vortex so that air can flow through the shish a bit, for sure use 3 coals, ive never used shishaco coals but with three Coconara's it has plenty of heat without having to use a wind cover, i do a kind of spiral style of holes that stops once i hit the middle then poke about 6 wider holes in the center of the bowl between the middle and the edge, works out perfect for me everytime! hope you can find a solution

I pack my pyrex vortex bowl differently then I do my clay vortex. So which do you have? My opinion is try to use less tobacco and densely pack it against the spire in the middle. I usually get about an 2 hour smoke session with about 20-25 grams of tobacco with one natural belgian coal. Good clouds and flavor all the way till the coal dies. My vote, less tobacco, and densely pack it against the spire. It looks weird and sounds weirder but it works extremely well and saves me a crapload of tobacco.

I always pack my vortex bowl fluffy then lightly pat down the top center to make sure that all of the holes in the spire arent clogged. 3 ring pattern with a push pin. Ring all the way around the outer edge. Ring around the center then a large spaced ring inbetween them. I use 3 coals and a windcover to start it off, then i take the windcover off, and use 2 to 3 coals alternating. It works great!! I get awesome clouds from any tobacco i smoke out of it.

i do pack it more fluffy than i usually would. from all the youtube vids and stuff ive seen, it doesnt look like im doing anything wrong at all. i know its not just a bad batch of shisha because i get good smoke with my egyptian. i used a windcover last night and still got the same results. My vortex is a clay vortex for whoever asked that.
