Default Nakhla Virgin

Just loaded up a bowl of Orange in my new KM, and we'll see what happens. Kind of awkward experience setting it up as the tobacco seemed dry and wet at the same time. Wish me luck!

Epic failure for me... 2 coco coals, windcover off and on. Packed tight but not as tight as tangiers, using a vortex bowl. Sometimes good smoke, most of the time burnt. Coals were on the sides so I don't know what happened.

Describe the session, why was it a failure?

At first for maybe 10 mins, I was getting a decent smoke. Good clouds, orange flavor, cool smoke. After that, it seemed to start burning so I took off the windcover, moved the coals a smidgen towards the edge, cleared the chamber and smoked. It tasted charred already and REALLY hot. Then I moved the coals around to try and smoke untouched areas of tobacco and even after 10 pulls, it was doing the same thing. The tobacco seemed like it was baking not burning (which was validated when I threw in the towel and opened the foil to see what was going on) and everything was just REALLY hot in there and smelled extremely.. spicy? I'm thinking heat management as I don't have much experience at all with this brand, but I of course fell back on my SB as I can get it to go perfectly every time. Been smoking Marlette for the past 30 mins.

I think you overpacked the bowl... nakhla is really heat sensitve, so if the shisha is to close to the coals you'll get a burnt taste...
I use less shisha in the bowl an pack it it a little bit tighter

Im gonna have to disagree here.

Nahkla is NOT heat sensitive at all.

I would advise the following:

If you are using 1 layer of foil, try using a doubled layer for easier heat control!

Loose pack in the bowl, you dont want it to be like a tangiers pack.

When first starting the session let the shisha chill with the coals on top for at least 3 mins before you take a hit! Sometimes with such a dense pack when you just start huffing on the hose right after placing the coals on the foil the shisha will be burnt not only in a small layer on top but in a clumped and thick layer, which can make the entire bowl taste like seared rubber and coals!

Keep trying my friend! And may the god of Nahkla smile upon you with its smoky goodness!

(Nahkla orange is an amazing flavor btw! good choice!)

Lightly sprinkle in .. then very gently pack until it is about 1/8" between the foil and the top of the tobacco. Be sure not to interfere with the holes of the Vortex. Use two coconara coals (on opposite ends of the bowl) and a windcover. Let it sit for 4 minutes 5 if you can wait that long! Then start hitting it, use the windcover to manage the heat and rotate the coals as you see fit.

You DO NOT want tobacco touching the foil, for any tobacco cuz then you are just "Burning" it. If you want a flavorful smoke, just smolder it. You won't get gigantic clouds, but you should get gigantic flavor.

I don't know how tall your hookah is? If anything less than 28" make sure you use a lot of ice!

Also, if citrus flavors burn .. it is bad and hard to recover from.

Cheers!

By the way .. the above information is true for most hookah tobacco .. at least in my experience

I'm not a fan of Nahka Orange. Al fahker is 1000x better that nahkla.

If you're a Nahkla virgin, i highly recommend you to try Sweet Lime or Chocomint.

If you say it it has to be right.... but i always need to use less coals with nahkla then with af.

But maybe its the belgium nakhla (verry verry dry... its the only thing u can get here).

I do get a lot of burnt taste with nahkla... my advice... stay away from it

I wouldn't say to stay away, especially if you get dryer stuff in Belgium. It may be older than you think.

Try adding a little vegetable glycerin to rejuvenate it?

And I agree with stino .. I love Nakhla .. but I think Al Fakher has a nice Orange as well

Cheers!

I used to have the same proble with Nakhla, dude.

Try this:

Just sprinkle the tobacco in there and let it sit even above the rim of the bowl.

Then get some aluminum foil, 1 layer, and put it on the bowl. Your foil should be pressing down on the tobacco into the bowl. So yes, it touches the foil pretty much all over the place.

Then poke 4-5 big holes in it. Not like huge, just use a shrimp skewer, for example, and poke a whole with that all the way down to the bottom of the bowl.

Now put your coals on it, I use two 1/4 pieces of Exoticas, and let it sit for a while. After a couple of minutes start smoking and I guarantee you that it'll be a smoke rich, smooth smoke.

In case the smoke does get a little harsh, take one of the coals off and just let the tobacco cool off for a little bit.

I was a little concerned about trying this method but this is the only method I use anymore when smoking Nakhla.

Your main problem is the packing. Just literally sprinkle it in a little at a time till theres a little space between the tobacco and rim and poke enough holes for really good airflow. trust me

Ditch the vortex bowl. It restricts airflow way too much.

In an Egyptian head, I'd suggest packing tighter than af. Between and fluff and really tight.

Best way I've found is a Tangiers phunnel and packing it pretty dense. Nakhla to me has always been able to take more heat than any shisha

Thanks guys! From the responses, I can conclude it was most definitely the packing. As Sui mentioned, when I first started drawing, the top of the tobacco smoked well but burnt quickly. I packed it waaaaay too tight as I was packing it kind of like normal and kind of like tangiers at the same time. I made it a point to not have the shish touch the foil but it was definitely in there too tight. Used probably close to 25g in a normal sized vortex bowl. Will try again tomorrow. Had a long day at work today so I am winding down with my usual and safe SB. Thanks again! Hopefully I can post about a success story.

That was my bad, sorry. I recommend Chocomint (from nakhla) and sweet lime (from afzal).

Both of them have a sweet and delicious taste and they're great to begginners and newcomers.
