I use 2 coconut coals on a medium sized Egyptian or 3 coconut coals on a small phunnel. I also highly recommend a windcover if you don't already have one.

I use 3-4 coals on a phunnel, and I get massive amounts of smoke off my KM.

Try the overpacking method, it gives you plenty of smoke!

with tobacco that can handle the heat, of course. doing this still requires good coal care to have a bowl that isn't too harsh through and through

I use a KM Amoura with a large funnel bowl and 3-4 coconaras. Sometimes I have to watch the heat, otherwise, flavor and cloud density/size is extraordinary.

I do it with Nakhla and I pretty much just throw 2 coals on there and ash them and move them around.
