Default coconaras coals red but not ready?

Hey all,

im tired of using QL three kings coals so i bought a full bunch of coconaras and recently CH to try them both, the thing that happen is when i put them on the burner about 10-12 minutes, the coals get red and flames burst from it, but the second i putt it on the bowl and start smoking, after like 4-5 minutes the bottom side of the coal is totally black and i have to putt it back on the burner or turn it on the opposite side but it gets annoying turning it every 4-5 minutes, what could be the problem?

sorry for my english

thanks,
MirelZ

How old is the box of the coals you are using? What type of weather or humidity you have goin on where you are at? The coals that you have or are using may have been affected by hummidity or something.

You are supposed to flip the coals but not that often. Honestly I just move my coals i dont ever flip them. I had this same problem with the CH QL's i had and found that it was the box of coals. They had gotten moisture to them and they were comprimised.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've noticed this on every coal I've ever used and never had a problem. I never bother flipping my coals. Maybe I should.

But, oxygen is necessary for something to burn, I'd assume that includes coals. The bottom side of the coals are getting very little oxygen compared to the rest of the coal. It's bound to get dark.

What you've described is what I encounter every time I smoke hookah so it's not just you. I've used AF natural coals, Coconara's and CH naturals and this occurs with all of them. The side against the foil will turn dark after some time on the bowl while the top is still glowing red hot, then when flipped this phenomenon will occur again with the red hot side slowly turning dark and the dark side on the top starting to glow red hot again. I'm not a scientist or anything but my guess is that this is caused by heat disseminating from the bottom of the coal across the surface of the foil which makes that side cooler over time. The top of the coal doesn't have anything to disseminate heat to so it is hotter.

That sounded way smarter than what I said.

Maybe with the exception of the less hot and more hot thing. I read it back and then remembered there are two words to perfectly describe that...cooler and hotter. Duh!

May be not enough airflow in your bowl. How long between pulls? If you let it sit longer which doesn't breathe the coals, then this happens. Keep the fire going!

Ya it's definitely normal. It looks like they're out, but don't worry. 5 mins may be a little too much, just let it sit. I usually flip/ash when it starts to smoke differently than when it started. If your smoke experience isn't negatively affected, I wouldn't worry too much about the coal visuals. Happy smoking!

the only time you have to really worry about coals going out is with a windcover. my bowl was a bit too high so the coals werent aligned right. i usually use my tongs to prop the windcover up so it lets oxygen in but my friend set it up and didnt so 2 min in to the session and my coals were out...

anyway back on topic. like everyone else has said, its not big deal. just keep on smoking.

Yeah, I flip my coals about every 20 minutes. Slow down on the pulls though. We don't need more instances of CO poisoning.

I don't usually flip my coals on the bowl, but I may try it out.
