Default Screen or foil?

New hookah smoker as of today (hooray), it was an early Christmas present from my girlfriend. Got some Rosetta banana-coconut and it had a very distinct soapy aftertaste, or maybe even a waxy banana taste to it...so I won't be smoking that anymore.

Anyways, on to what I was curious about, my hookah came with a screen, and was just wondering if I should use a screen or foil? I couldn't really find any pros/cons on them so I decided I would ask here. Thanks for any help, and I'm looking forward to smoking some more shisha!

Foil takes more "effort" but gives you significantly more control over heat management. Poking holes is a good way to experiment with different methods of smoking. When you find a pattern that works well for you it will be more rewarding to use foil than a screen could ever be. Every screen that I've seen has holes that are very large and also has a recessed platform for the bowls that rests below the rim of the bowl. This limits the amount of tobacco you can load because you don't want to have the screen touching the screen.

Yeah I noticed how the screen was recessed and went into the bowl instead of on top so I did have to take a little out, thanks for the response and the education on this! I'll start experimenting with foil now.

foil, foil, foil. the screen is easier but holes are too big, more prone to burning, and too much ash gets down in the tobacco.
