Default Hookak Style Guide

I decided to make a thread on how to identify what each hookah is (e.g. Egyptian or syrian) using simple words so every one can understand. Most traditional hookahs obey some rules that are just the way people made narguilehs in several countrys. there are ofcource exceptions, but generally thats how it goes.
Before i begin, this is the anatomy of a hookah

1st of all, the most common type is Egyptians
here is a randon pic off hookah-shshia

What to notice Stem: has those rounded conical whatever stuff and almost always the same heart.....
Vase : Egyptians always have this kind of vase, unless you change it........
Hoseport : its leaning down and usually has that ball thingy, usually have weld signs
General : no etchings , simple disign, big purge valve
NOTE : if its a scew-on its not authentic

SYRIANS
Pic of my favourite from JandR

What to notice: Stem: Really good looking stems, etched, carved or chromed usually.More bell like heart
Vase : vases vary so dont rely on those
Hoseport : always straigh and the purge valve is smaller than E's
General : these are usually machinemade so no weld signs or so
NOte : screw-on = not authentic

Bohemian

The large glass myas fall under this category but bohemian doesnt mean Mya

plus you can find more here (from Jimmy)http://www.hookahpro.com/forum/index.php?topic=1553.0

What to notice: Stem : 2 kinds One is the lebanese, just straight stem and the other is cloisone style
Vase : (usually) Genie type and round-bottomed
Hoseport: straigh and plain + small purge valve,
Heart: Round

Modern
Modern hookahs vary a lot. The only 2 quality moderns that are well known are the stargate style ones (offered by taqsem and hookah-shisha) and acrilic mya's (am not suggesting that only those are well made but there are the best known, IMO always)

What to note: Stem: modern style , usually no etchings, sometimes chromed
Vase: not really a good criteria
Hoseport: usually straight but these vary
Notes: Most are screw-on usually have some of the fetures of a traditional one

Am pretty sure there are many other categories (iranian, indian etc) but these are not really common nowadays.
If you got any deatails on any other kind please help me improve this guide

Cheers

this is rosie (except rosie has a pink base instead of green...hence the name rosie)

website says it's syrian, but the hoseport is curved...

are you a bad enough dude to clear this up for me?

Cant be egyptian :P but i believe its not syrian style either, i believe its bohemian due to the stem. Syrian stems are mostly metal (with very few exceptions because of the way the are produced). Maybe it comes from syria but has a bahemian style stem with a standard vase. This i actually a beautiful and unique hookah.
As i said in the beginisg of my 1st post not all hookah clearly fit into a category, many are mix and match by vendors and some syrian hookahs adopt some bohemian fetures as some egyptian might adopt the syrian heart (KM have a more syrian style heart, IMO)

Anw this is just style and all caltural stuff. Has nothing to do with the origin of the hookah or its performance.
If you ask someone else, he might tell you that its somethink else. Its just style so its just opinions.

Cheers

Thats why it was finally made. It took some years to find out about all the styles and features of those and with everyones help we could start a section like "hookah history and knowledge"
For me hookah is not just smoking, its a lifestyle, so despite am quite i go beyond which brand makes the best tobacco. I love looking at its history, culture, etiquettes amd traditions. I thnk it helps that live in the lowest part of Europe almsot in middle east, here tradition is 1/2 our life.

Mine has the characteristics you mentioned of an Egyptian except it has etchings. It also has a bulb like thing on the stem about halfway up. Might this still be an Egyptian or would it be Syrian simply because of the etching

KM's have etching too on the hose port. Etching doesnt necessarily mean that the hookah in question is Syrian.

Anyways, most hookahs nowadays are made by machines and i believe sooner or later there will only be one or two types of hookahs available. T=

it actually has distinct weld marks. I have no idea what brand it is though because I just bought it a lounge. It's really sturdy and smokes like a dream though..

I never sugested that thats a definite guide. Am not the hookah god or anythink but i've studies a bit on hookah and styles and these are my conclusions. that's just a brief idea how to tell what is which hookah.
Btw there are more elegant egyptian other than the simple ones and most of them come from brand names e.g. KM's

Mr Weenis.

The Hookah is Syrian.

The wood portion is most likely a component made in India. I have a simular rig.

Yeah, i don't think people sitting there hand-making hookahs follow rules governing their designs.. i think they just make them based on preference, or follow some blueprints. That's what's so fun with finding such an original hookah! It's like a Transvestite!
