Don't bother. The shell will be too thin and light once it has been charred. It would burn nicely for a very short period of time.

the coconut coals are reconstituted coconut so they are thicker. i agree it will probably be to thin. it should work just like how you can use any plain wood as long as you fully burn it and let it turn into an ember, just might not last very long

You shouldn't use just any plain wood. Most soft or resinous woods can harbor hazardous chemicals. Oak is known to be safe, as is some citrus wood. If you use pine or something like that you might wind up in the hospital.

while i do suggest being cautious i dont see any reason that once the piece of wood has burned to an ember that it could harbor anything since anything should have off gassed. that being said i will say do not take my word for it. i honestly kind of think pine wouldnt even last long enough to be worth it to even try regardless of if it could have ill effects though.

Pine has loads of resins. Ever stand next to a pine fire? Nasty stuff. Unless you have a kiln to properly prepare the charcoal, there will be resins left, and that stuff is bad news.

Additionally, some hardwoods are virulently toxic (Cocobolo springs to mind, although I don't see why anyone would ever use cocobolo for hookah charcoal.). My point is, if you don't know what it is, what's in it, and what temperature it needs to be baked at for what time, you're putting yourself in a risky position.

I don't know about you, but having a smoke ain't worth that kind of risk to me. I'll let the professionals make my coals. Thanks.

i agree, i know pine fires get pretty nsaty when they are burning but once they turn to embers i have never noticed anything coming off of them since by that point everything has converted to charcoal inside the embers as far as i could always tell.

Best to make Charcoal with should be a hardwood.

Btw I was nearly killed when a BBQ was made using oleander wood for the coals the poison transfered to the meat from the coals (glowing embers) So be vary carefull what wood you choose to make coals with
