Exclamation Tasteless Shisha

A couple weeks ago, I got a new hookah from hookah-shisha and have been slowly breaking it in.

The problem I have run into is that I have found that shisha is generally tasteless.

So far I've tried two romman flavors (rose and berry melon) as well as starbuzz blue mist and fusion guava.

I get great smoke, no harsh, but just no taste.

I'm packing loosely, below the edge of the bowl, and when inspecting the bowl post smoke, I can see the shisha is getting baked (but not burning and sticking to the foil). I also mix the shisha well with the juice before packing.

I'm using a standard Egyptian bowl, 1 layer of HD foil (shiny side down), with plenty of small, evenly spaced holes. I'm using 1 Golden Coals QL (2 is too hot) and I wait for it to ash over before setting it on top. I've alternated with and without a windcover.

There are no air leaks and I'm using a Nammor hose (which I have had for about a year). I have cleaned the hookah with vinegar, baking soda, and a long stem brush. I'm using ice (with the water) in the base.

I've smoked hookah on and off for about 6 years, so I know what it *should* taste like.

I don't smoke cigarettes.

I am going to get some coco nara coals and a vortex bowl, to see if this solves my problem, yet I can't help but expect at least some taste on my current setup.

Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? It's just driving me crazy.

You may want to jump up to 1.5 coals or maybe even two if there is room. Those coals are fairly small.

So, I've done some different testing with different coal amounts and patterns, all with either no result, or complete burning. So just for kicks, I tried a different egyptian bowl that I have, one thats more traditional.

Turns out the bowl I was using was much wider, but not as deep, so it wasn't cooking the shisha well. Once I switched to the deeper, more traditional bowl, things have gotten much better.

Oh I thought this was going to be a thread listing tasteless shisha. I was gonna mention Al Masah Red Bull. Smells great and has no taste whatsoever. LOL

i seem to get more flavor from a smaller gauge hose. you might wanna try that. if you dont have one a sanitary mouth tip could also help. the slightly restricted draw seems to concentrate the smoke/flavor.

also, try using room temp water.

generally, colder water makes thicker smoke at the expense of flavor.

if your using water from the fridge or ice pitch it for some tap water and you should have no shisha stuck to the foil also how much is there between the foil and your tobacco. cause you should be using 2 coals unless your bowl is absoultly tiney or your using a wind cover.

That is really good to know. I will try that tomorrow.

When I added more heat to the first type of bowl, it would just burn. The new bowl can easily take 2 coals and it really helps.

There is no burning (i.e. shisha stuck to the foil).

My first bowl was so shallow it had little room between the shisha and the foil (maybe 1 cm). The newer, deeper bowl I tried allowed me to leave much more space (1/2 inch) which accommodates the two coals.

All that to say, I think the deeper, traditional Egyptian style bowl solved my problem.

I'll try a different flavor tomorrow and see how that turns out.
