Default Heat Management Help

Before you comment saying this has been asked before, read what I have to say. I was at my buddies the other day, and I brought over my Hookah (Mya QT). I look in his shisha collection and pull out Starbuzz "X on the Beach" and pack a normal amount into a Mya Ceramic Bowl, double layer foil, and normal hole pattern. In the past we usually only use 1 Coal on the Bowl, and when it dies down a bit, we add another, so 1-1/2 coals. This time, we put on 2 Starlight Naturals. They barely fit on so I chopped each one in half and put one on each end of the bowl. When we started the clouds were monstrous and the taste was decent, with not too much harshness. As we kept going the shisha got burnt and the clouds were still great (obviously). I see people all over YouTube and the forums using 3 Coconaras as a standard and they get good clouds and taste.

My question is.. Why does mine burn? Is it because of the coals? Or is my bowl too small?? Or another reason?

Thanks!

coals burn at different temperatures and you might have overpacked.

It all depends on your setup since your hookah is smaller i would imagine it doesnt need as much heat as a hookah that is larger. I just use small amounts of heat and add because then i dont feel like im wasting coals just letting them sit in the ashtry.

just because the hookah is smaller doesnt mean it will require less heat and vice versa.

the problem is your Mya Ceramic bowl. They are very thin and heat up very quickly. When you see videos of ppl using 3-4 coals, its because they are most likely using a tangiers or egyptian bowl which can tolerate alot of heat (for a while). Ive come to the conclusion that the mya bowls are pretty much useless

i only know of one reason tobacco burns... temperature, which is controlled by the coals. you'll get a better sense for heat management over time with respect to different bowls, coals, and tobacco. if you can think of another reason, let us know ; )

oh and one tip...
a wind cover can be used as a heat cage to help you get by with using fewer/smaller coals.

I think different tobacco reacts differently to the heat. For example, I currently have Nakhla Fakhfakhina Mixed fruit and Double Apple, I find that double apple much easier heat manageable, while I am having trouble with mixed fruit. So it could be Starbuzz "x on the beach" that is more sensitive to the heat.

From my experience, Starbuzz is definitely sensitive to heat. I think it is mainly because it is such a wet tobacco, where as, from what I have experienced with the little Nakhla I have smoked, it comes of as more greasy than wet. I've noticed I need a little bit more heat for the Nakhla in that case. Although I'm not all that sure if Nakhla is consistently like that or not, being that all I have smoked from that is a 250 box of Mandarin.

You might find only using one layer of foil beneficial as well.

Well, if it's HD foil. If it's that thin flimsy stuff, double up son!

as stated above coal temp is the main diffrence, try packing your bowl lower take into the fact shisha may expand under more heat, try changing the hole pattern up for the extra coal, add more holes for better airflow.

For me I use 3 coals too but I am also using a small size Tangiers phunnel bowl which spaces out the 3 coals a bit more. Ceramic bowl might not be round enough to fit that amount of coals since it will focus too much of the heat together. Basically i think your bowl is too small =3
