Default Mysterious Egyptian Mu'essel

I Got an excited phone call from by pal Javier whom I wrote about in the "Cosmic Horror and Smoking" thread with news of a mysterious and new, to me at least, Egyptian Mu'essel. Javier recently retired and relocated to the charming city of Al Ghardaqah and since he has lots of time and isn't cursed by my pathetic linguistic ability travels a great deal in the Southern portions of Egypt.

In any case he picked up a mu'essel I never heard of called "mu'essel Qalamoun" which as I understand it is not a moassel at all but rather an old fashioned jurak simelar to those found in the KSA. Apparently it's got a strong taste of fire fire cured tobacco with a definite Turkish/Balkan type quality with noticeable nutty and mint like flavours. He is sending a bit and i'll write a review and post pictures when I get some.

I wonder if anyone here has ever heard of this stuff or has any any idea what "Qalamoun" refers to?

traditional jurak? nutty and minty like flavors? sounds wonderful!!

http://www.kalamoun.com/

google - Kalamoun (sometimes written Qalamoun) is a 5000* year-old Lebanese northern city in Koura. The "Kalamos" of Greco-Roman times and the "Calmont" of the Crusaders, Kalamoun became a center for brass work after metal workers from Tripoli's traditional Souk an-Nahhaseen moved here several decades ago. The main road is lined with small workshops and showrooms where brass bowls, candlesticks and other objects are hammered out in the old tradition. A good look around these shops may turn up interesting antique pieces as well. Roadside stands in Kalamoun also sell olive oil and fruit syrups made from mulberry, lemon, orange and other juices.

cant wait for the revie

Apparently it's at the post office right now but i've lent out both my cars and my sidecar to friends running errands so I doubt i'll be able to pick it up till tomorrow. I am super excited about and a little miffed that the Arabs keep all the really interesting stuff for themselves.

I stopped by the post office on the way to the train station and I can say that mu'essel Qalamoun comes wrapped in wax paper tied with a red ribbon and a little little bit of paper with some Arabic and a few numbers glued onto the side. Very old fashioned looking. It smells like a mix of cedar, molasses, mint and tobacco. I haven't tried it set since being away from home would mean smoking it out of my travel narghile and something this exotic requires a full sized rig.

When I get home i'll try and get one of those new style digital cameras and get a picture up along with a review.

I managed to bum a camera of the manager of the club I played at recently and I got a few pictures of mu'essel Qalamoun for you guys. At one point it had a little sticker of the Egyptian flag on it but that fell off at some point. I still haven't had a chance to smoke it but i'll try it out when I get back home. It really smells amazing so I assume it will be great. No luck finding out anything about it that I haven't already said so it's still pretty mysterious. Perhaps the Egyptians here have something to add?

I had a show earlier tonight in Odense and I was crashing at a friend's place with my band mates which was cool because someone let me use her Elmas brand Nargile so I smoked this Qalamoun stuff. First this that is a way strong tobacco, i'd about as strong as Kass Afriki. In terms of tastes i'd say that it has a strong molasses type sweetness and a very fig like quality along with the strong tobacco flavour. In background are a mint like taste and something woody. Very pleasant taste with a very heavy bodied smoke. It produces about as much smoke a black style moassel when you freshen it up with a bit of molasses but glycerin. Bottom line is that this is very unique and high quality smoke but a bit much for everyday use. I wish I knew how to get it on a regular basis but I doubt I will be that lucky.

So do I!

I am very interested in finding tobaccos for hookahs which would be like the old stuff late nineteenth century travellers wrote about (like Richard Burton the explorer), and which would have some Latakia in it, if posible.
I love Balkan Sobranie mixture on my briar or meerschaum pipes, if You see what I mean... Plenty of rich oriental smoky flavour...

This Egyptian moassel sounds really great...
