Default Indian shishas - where the hell are they?

Supposedly hookahs were invented in India (or at the very least, they were early adopters). I only got into the hobby because my roommate and ex-girlfriend went to school there for two years. So why is it that all I see on the internet are supplies from the Middle East/Egypt, China, and the US? I was prompted to post by Mad_Hatter's note that his local shop has a brass Indian hookah for sale, so they are out there.

Do your research on which Desi Murli you would like then BUY IT. It's so inexpensive that there's no reason not to.

He seems to be using shisha properly and is asking about hookahs of Indian origin. Hubbly bubbly or the like. I may be wrong though.

I am not very aware of Indian hookahs but to the best of my knowledge it did not pick up the same level of popularity in India that it did in other parts of the world. So, while the origin on the pipe is there it was the craftsman in the middle east that made it what it is today and enhanced the design.

I have seen a couple Indian style hookah and they are odd. Small bodies, thin shtems and a rigid mouth piece on another stem. But that is just one style.

Desi Murli you will have to prepare before smoking.
Afzal and Soex you can smoke straight out of the box without any prior preparation. Afzal is the tobacco version and Soex is the nontobacco version.
by shisha the OP is using the correct terminology for Hookah not tobacco

I was indeed talking about the pipe itself, but I appreciate the information on the smoking material as well. I have been thinking about checking out some DM.

Thank you guys for the links. Those are really interesting... I like the all-metal style, hard as it may be to determine water level. Kautika, that makes sense... Obviously we're not all smoking out of coconut bases with no hose, haha

Indian huqqas very all over the place in terms of quality but they are rarely exported. India has literally a hundred or brands of moassel/jurak/tombac and what little I have had is typically better then what can be had in the U.S. market. I am huge fan of DM and Afzal makes several good flavours as well. I hate Soex and I regret to say that pretty much everything else in India that I have any experience with isn't imported.

I plan on visiting someday, so maybe I can pick one up then (and a few choice tobaccos). Is there some sort of prohibition I need to know about or do they just not export much?

according to my dad indians have been smooking shisha since the time of the moghuls and they he smoked it as a child aswell but i don't know if it was the indians who started it but the moghuls did come from an arabian backround and i think they were the main smokers of it in the past.

the first hjookah I had was home made out of a Pyrat rum bottle and various other items. It wasn't half bad. I'd smoke out of a coconut.

I really need to get my hands on some DM.

I was literally just shopping around for some DM. Texashookah's shipping is cheaper but they have fewer flavors and the moassel itself is more expensive than hookah1.

Hmm... that's a nice bottle btw. Might have to look into one for my forthcoming hobonargile.

Oops sorry, I'm just too used to everyone around me using that word for the tobacco.

Great thread idea. I've only seen a few pics of some posted here, they're extremely unique.

Indian huqqas can be great and the Koyilandy style products have been justly famous for well over a century. They do make a lot of crap rigs as well but then so does almost everyone else. In any case, I don't think anyone imports Indian huqqas to the U.S. or to Europa except on a small and very sporadic basis. We do have a few Indian members here so I guess the best thing is to ask them to find a nice piece for you.
