You can scrape off the black, burned tips of the carpet threads to make it somewhat less noticeable, but the divot is pretty well permanent.

^Yeah he is right. My friend knocked over a coal once in my room and it melted the carpet. I just got some scissors and cut the black/hard/crusty part on the top. It looks normal but its like a hole. It looks like there was a table leg or something sitting there lol

Once you do what they have said above. Find a piece of carpet that is less noticeable (back of a closet etc) cut off some strands and glue them in.. You'll never notice unless it's stepped on and you can semi feel the glue lol..

Than once it looks good, go buy a shitty area rug so you don't have to worry about the next time you drop a coal!

You can use a wire brush to pull up the divot left in the carpet after you trim the black part off. Works pretty well. My parents never knew.

I've gotten rid of them with some mix of cleaning products, it wasn't a little square on the carpet it was an explosion ("I have to grip this as tight as I can don't want another one to FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU).
I'll write up a little guide on the mix later.

go find a closet and cut a piece of the same color carpet the exact size of the burn. then use a box cutter or razor blade to cut out the burn in the shape of the first piece you cut. then get some rug glue, put some on the floor and the carpet then hold in lace with something heavy, works like a charm. below is a very close up of a recent patch i did if you look very cose you can see the patch

Another good idea: Keep a glass of water nearby when you smoke. Should the coals drop, you can douse them before too much damage is done. I've kept some potentially major burns from becoming major this way.

Get yourself a razor you don't plan on using any more and just shave the carpet.
Don't make a habit otherwise I am sure you would notice the odd bald patches
