Default Tongs

Just wanted some opinions I tinker around with metal working and have an ideal for some tongs. The ideal is I am going to try to make some tongs but instead of haveing it to where you push them to close I am going to make them to where they are always closed and when you push in on them they open up. I will not be able to nickle plate them but maybe polish them to a shine. So some of you that have been smokeing awhile and newbies does this sound like a good ideal? Any suggestion on othe parts of them are welcome.

sounds cool to me, just make sure the pressure isn't too much that you bust open the coal...

I think this is a pretty cool idea. I agree with Mackmaven, just make sure they don't put to much pressure on the coal. I would try these out. Definitely want to see some pics and video if you make some.

If you've seen the tweezers of the same idea, they look kinda like an angular figure 8 that's only connected at one end. Depending on how stiff the metal is that you're using, they could be way too "squeeze-y" or right just.

Overall, I think that would be an awesome idea, I know I for one always get tired of having to hold on to coals while transporting them long distances. I carry a spare tray under them "just in case" my fingers get tired and I let go by accident.

sounds nice but a few concerns on it

-coals tend to get fragial and can "explode" or crumble when to much pressure is put on them

-moving spent coals cleanly may become harder

- it would have to fit all coals well to work, round one may be prone to fireing away from the tongs.

true release could be hard pending the design, however i would disagree in going for a reguler tong.

if your a metal worker or have a talent for engeneering then i say go for it, best case scenario you create a new item that may or may not catch on, but one you can call your own and the community will spend countless days modifying for individual needs.

worst case scenario, you learn one way it wont work, and edision didnt make a working light bulb his first try.

42mm so they fit around the 40mm ql's easily. I never use any coals bigger than that. Not a bad place to start lol

That's a great idea. My tongs are regular, but i pinched em close, so when i open and place the coal, they close and hold it tight so i dont have to apply pressure. I do, because there's always the chance of slipping, but they hold..
I may try and make one 2 based on ur idea as i'm about to have alot more spare time.

just my two cents i think it would be a cool idea to integrate an interlocking spike mechanism on the grippers, like make it so that they can grip the coal better, without punching holes of course and make it so that they can close all the way i don't know if that's a good design but it just popped into my head and thought it would be a cool idea.

Thanks for the ideals I am going to look around for the right kind of metal this weekend. Also thought about making them a heavy grade then most tongs so maybe the end of them could be a little sharp so you could cut the coals.

good luck caveman cause im actually lookin for some new tongs so if its good i'll buy one off you. also i like how standard tongs have like those teeth things that go inward(helps grab i guess). the and it just me i dont like tongs that have a thin tip for a grabber.

It sounds cool, I just imagine trying to move coals, and pushing, and making my coals fly off the bowl onto my floor, on accident. Maybe not though, i'm just a critic! haha.

A thought:

I would like to get a pair of tongs that work like a hemostat, where you could "close" them so they grip the coal at a nice, even pressure. Would keep one from accidentally squeezing the coal too hard, which can only result in an exploded coal, mangled carpet, and soul-crushing sorrow.

Quoted for truth.

I love this idea, though.
