Default Electric coal windcover!!!

So, I saw a review on electric coals... And got me thinking, why not built a windcover that will accommodate a heating element, run off a rotary dial? So, I strolled to walgreens and bought a ten dollar electric burner which includes the rotary dial and the heating element.. I bent it to fit inside my windcover that I made out of air ducting tubes from homedepot, Wired it up to the rotary dial and voila! So now I have electric coals that you can control the temperature for! (first bowl was an epic failure, it burned so hot that it melted the foil ONTO the shisha.. Tad too warm)

It does work! Like a dream... But I've just got to figure out the right temperature to get it to not burn the shit out of the shisha... I'm figuring it out right now.. Starting at the lowest temp, and slowly turning it up until I get good clouds..

that's the hard part of making an electric coil in place of coals.

coals heat up when you take a hit, then cool down after. it's pretty much impossible to make an electric heating element do exactly that.

Yeah, It's not working as I'd like... there's no perfect temp.. It's burning the shisha, or not heating it enough.. And it's tasting waaaayy metallic-y.. Like I'm smoking a brick of aluminum.. I'm about to classify this experiment a failure.

Yeah I love my dog. He wasn't too impressed with this build.. Cause it stunk up my apt... You know when you burn the shisha SO BAD that it smells like popcorn? Yeah. Popcorn mixed with foundry smell.. It's disgusting.

Just an idea but...

Try building your own hose with some sort of "switch" in the tube so that when the resistance is flipped, the heating element will heat up to a preset temp and when there is no draw from the hose, the coil backs off to another preset temp.

Your best bet to find the ideal temps would be to take a laser thermometer to the coals at idle and then when you're taking a draw.

Just keep at it and maybe you'll have a break through. Just need a little ingenuity and some luck haha

Wicked cool attempt! Its hard to emulate the way that coals behave like chad said. Still you get many points in my book for this build.

Thanks guys. I'll keep tinkering with this.. But for the meantime, til I have a breakthrough. Stick with coals.. I think that if one of those big Ecig companies got this.. Use the same technology that's in the cigs based on suction to put the burner on *draw, temperature. And then when there's no suction have an *idle, temperature then burning the shisha would be near impossible.. I might have gotten ahead of myself with this idea.. Needs more work.

this has been attempted and discussed many times in the past. i do believe MR. B got one from China that worked but he needed two of them for it to be perfect.

in any case good attempt and why not keep trying, the worse that can happen is failure
