Default Bring a bad box of coals back to life

So, it was established that I got a bad box of Coconara coals. About two out of every three coals would go out half way through. This was my first bad box, but it was consistent with other user's experience with a faulty box.

Well, not content to lost the $15 I spent on the box, I thought I'd try something.

I spread the coals out on a tray and placed them in the oven at 200 degrees on broil. I left them in there for about two hours. The bad coals smoked good as new all the way through.

Don't throw away your faulty box of coals! Try this first, it's easy, there isn't much mess and you can't over do it. Baking the coals for a long time at a low temperature will, hopefully, thoroughly dry them out!

Removes the moisture that the coals absorbed to dry them out coals are carbon and carbon is hygroscopic (attracts moisture)

We make a lot of home made italian food which often requires bread crumbs. We use the technique to dry out italian bread to turn into crumbs. I just figured I'd give it a shot with coals to see if it would work. I've since used about 9 more coals from the box and all have worked perfectly.

I think as long as you have an oven, it's safe to say there's no such thing as a 'bad' box of coals.

Or try leaving on the stove for 10-12 min, should burn the moisture out.

Glad you didn't get gypped out of your Coconaras. Always nice to see HP members getting resourceful and fixing problems that have plagued us all once in a while.

You mean like leaving on the burner? That won't dry them out. They'll still burn out prematurely. The burner is too hot, so it won't dehydrate them. It has to be be a low enough temp to evaporate the water, bit not ignite the coal.

Good idea! I've gotten bad boxes of AF nats, that did just as you said. I'll have to try this next time.

Hey Bpetruzzo, did your cocos stink when you lit them before having cooked them. Cause the current kilo I have stink like mad when I have them on the stove, and do black over a bit more then usual. Maybe I'll try giving them some oven lovin.

I would try lighting a few and see if they go out first. I don't know if there's any way to tell if they're damaged or not before actually lighting them. I've always thought Coconaras stink pretty bad when you're lighting them. I don't think it has to do with anything else.
