Default Weird taste.

Hello, Ive been smoking using my Km and a Vortex for a week now and had no issues,
but recently after 30 min starts to taste kinda nasty. Its not a burning taste but it tastes like u have a piece of plastic inside your bowl that melted.

(AF mint and nakhla had same problem).

i use 3 coconaras, and bowl gets pretty hot, but shisha was still soft and moist.

im thinking maybe its the rubber bowl grommet, should i try using cotton cloth insted of rubber grommet?

hmm...not quite sure about this one. I'd say it's probably your grommet, seeing how it only happens after everything is warmed up. Try using a wet paper towel in place of the bowl grommet for a session. If it doesn't happen again, you've found the culprit.

Glad to help. I buy about 3kg in 45pc boxes every 2 months and never have had this happen, so sorry you got unlucky. I'm sure the vendor will try and make it right.

The coconaras seem to be alright, the electric stove probably contaminated the coal, since its used for cooking. i used a torch instead and taste is much better now.

There was a thread recently on how to fix bad batches of coals. It was to bake them at 200 degrees (F) for like 1/2 an hour(might want to double check :X). Although that issue was coals going out during a session, I'm sure that you could try it without any harm or loss if it happened again.

Cooking Oil on the stoveplate will give transfer to the coals as it heats up

Aww, I feel so honored. My thread was referenced. lol
It's here: http://www.hookahpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19797

You bake for more like 2 hours. However, this doesn't sound like moisture damage, which is what my technique would fix. This sounds like something else altogether. Sure hope I never run into this problem. Sounds like a real buzz-kill for a good bowl.

Hope you get things figured out!

Haha, sorry for not crediting by name
I think that I may do this with a lot of my coals as I feel like the lowest amount of moisture would result in the lowest amount of smell during lighting as well.
But more on topic style I think this could help aswell, as I mention before, to burn off anything that is below the coals burning point ofc.
Also if you buy a stove thing from wal greens or similiar, let it burn for a good 10 mins on high, my coals tasted like fish/melting plastic for like 5 minutes the first time I lit it up.

I got a portable stove and still having same issues. I think it could be the coconaras.

Previously i bought 86 pc box from hookahstore.com and had no issues, then bought 108pc from different vendor and started having problems.

Under the lid of the box its dated 09/02, almost 8 year old coal, wtf.

I've noticed with some coals I've bought that if there's a gross taste, just leaving them on the burner longer than normal will help tremendously. You might try that.

Haven't had a chance too with all my exams. But does it emit a smell from the coal itself? Il light one up soon and let you know if it does
