Default what type of tobacco?

what type of tobacco is used in most shisha's (hookah-hookah not withstanding). I have heard of people using stuff like American Spirit cigarette tobacco but i'de like to know if anyone knows what the actual companies use. I'm looking to make some home made shisha and would like to stay true to some older style's. And, even with American Spirit being "all natural" I would rather stay away from cigarette tobacco.
Any help would be awesome

and sorry if this would have been better in the "home made hookah section" I wasn't sure.

Much Love

Regular pipe tobacco should do the job.

A guide to making your own tobacco written by Hajo can be found here(http://www.hookahpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=499) He has made more than a few batches and has some valuable advice here. You might also want to look into the guide for molasses use that is also linked in the article(http://www.hookahpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10088). This is a good jumping off point.

thats the path I was looking down as well.
But, the only problem being the huge amount of pipe tobacoo, like Va brightleaf, burley, latakia, perique, and so on. I don't know if shisha makers use a mix of these or stick with one. Living in Ky gives me a bit of luxuary when it comes to grabing some types of tobacco from a few county's down so i'm very excited to find the right blend or leaf. Plus I'll get to full around with some curing and blending for my pipe tobacco as well

Where in KY do you live? I live in Lexington and I've snuck on a field before and taken 2 big ol' tobacco leafs.

If you are looking for authenticity you are going to need to look into the types of tobacco native to the area that has the style you are looking to reproduce. Barring that it depends on whether you want to make something that tastes like tobacco or something more like a washed modern style moassel.

I do know that Elements tobacco which is made in Germany uses KY & VA tobacco.

If I remember correctly, HH & Jewels also uses either KY or VA tobacco.

Most of the tobacco is Virginia. It's the most widely grown and therefore the cheapest. And IIRC it's lower in nicotine than other varieties. Brands like Starbuzz and the like probably use all virginia leaf as they wash the bejeezus out of it and cover it with flavors. Other brands like Nakhla, Salloum or Desi Murli have other types mixed in, but the exact amounts are trade secrets. You'll have to experiment some.

Yeah but it was like 3 in the morning and the plants were literally growing 5 feet away from the road with no fence or anything. That's about as far as I'd go too XD
