Default Zaghoul

So I have some zag and I'm going to light it up for the first time tonight. Since it is a traditional tobacco, I was wondering if it leaves a heavy smell afterwards. It has been compared to a cigar and I wouldn't smoke a cigar inside, is it safe to smoke zag inside?
What is something I could use instead of glycerin?

You could use a molasses i suppose, or maybe just honey. The room note is a mellow molasses scent, nothing even close to a cigar.

You really need some glycerin to properly enjoy it. Smooths the harshness out.

the room will just have a nice tobacco smell to it, not like a cigar or anything. Wont be stinky.

I bought a 4oz bottle of vegetable glycerin at Whole Foods. I only use 1/8-1/4th of a teaspoon at a time so its stretched pretty far. Amazon.com also sells some (http://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-7700...7760783&sr=8-1). Hope this helps.

I've smoked zag without glycerin, it just shortens the session and (imo) intensifies the spice notes. It doesn't linger or smell nearly as intense as a cigar though.

Dude, I love you guys and I think your vids are great (Us traditionalists gotta stick together!) But I gotta say it... This method is neither right nor traditional. Zaghloul is a moassel, and it's meant to be smoked like a moassel, that means it needs to be at least slightly wet and with a screen.

Smoking it dry without a screen may work for you, but it's not the way it's intended to be used.

purpose of screen:

1. the heat just gets more evenly distributed from the hot metal in a circular pattern. I'm no expert, but I image with no screen... it is less distributed.
2. the screen helps also keep the ash directly off the tobacco, but I don't think it does a good job

I'm considering finding my old screen and giving it a whirl with my salloum plain

It also keeps the heating indirect. This allows the juices in the moassel to cook and evaporate rather than burning.

I have smoked it both ways and there is a major difference in flavor and taste between the two I enjoy both

Personaly I find zaghoul and khan el khalili smoke best packed tight in a windcove/metal screen, combo/mod bowl...Packed real tight so the tobacco is just under the screen throw on 3-4 coconara halfs, close the lid and go to town.
AF soft black I like best packed like my nakhla overpack style with a shallow wide egyptian one layer of thin screen and a foil crown on the bowl and 3-4 coconara halfs.

Here is my question...what did they do before aluminium foil and bottle of glycerin were invented? Two hundred or so years ago, how did they smoke stuff in the same realm as zag and bata?

They probably smoked it fresh instead of letting it sit on a vendor's shelf for two years.

+1

I'd also like to add that in the old days they would use cattle dung in place of charcoal. So man up and smoke the real traditional way
