Question Problems smoking outside

Hello Friends!

It's finally warm enough in Michigan to smoke outside, so today I finally bust out my acrylic pipe and have a smoke before class. Everything was going nice but then it started to get way way to harsh. Could someone please give me some advice on my set up?

Hookah: 29" Acrylic single hose "The Prince"
Tobacco: Sb Bluemist
Bowl: Standard Egyptian
Coals: 3 ******* Hookah Nats to start then down to 2 with a wind cover
Foil: 2 Layers of reyonlds hd poked with like 30 holes from a safety pin the tobacco is not touching the foil

It started up really nice but then got harsh quickly so I decided to take off the coals for a min and let the bowl cool. After that I put on 2 of the Ch nats and my large wind cover. It was smoking fine but wasn't giving me much smoke but when I put another coal on it was too much..... Advice please

Only use one layer with the HD foil and use a tooth pick so the holes are bigger. sound like there was just way to much heat on it.

I forget who said this but you should treat the windcover as an extra coal. IE: 2 Coals + Windcover == 3 Coals. So if you start with three coals, pull off one, and then put on the cover you are back to 3 again.

That being said, I smoked SB out of a vortex last couple nights, outside, with the temps in the 70's and used 3 coals no problem. So it might be something else going on?

I set up my bowl the same way but if its harsh more than likely its too much heat. But of course check and make sure the tobacco isn't touching the foil.

What I find when smoking outside as that any little wind for any amount of time makes things harsh. What I like to do it take 3 coals and a wind cover to start, about 5-10 minutes, take 1 coal off and leave 2 with a wind cover. If at all this starts to get harsh pull the wind cover off. If smoke dies down add the third coal with no wind cover.

Seems complicated but it isn't. Just a lot to type, but very easy to do.

Make sure that HD foil is not anti stick, has a nasty metallic taste that comes off when being burnt.

Are you on a Base and can you leave on your time off? if so, check out Abu-Elnawas st. at night. Not sure if it is still the same with the war and everything but it had a nice nightlife.

wind provides more oxygen, which keeps the coals hotter. A windcover helps to prevent this, but it also makes the whole bowl like an oven, keeping the heat in. Just gotta find a balance.
Unless there was not wind, then IDK :3

How are you packing your head? Make sure you aren't pushing it down but "sprinkling" the tobacco. As others have mentioned use a toothpick, the holes from pushpins are too small.

I know how to properly pack SB in my egyptian head. I'm smoked it many times before, I'm just new to using CH nats and frequently smoking outside. Its a rather tricky things to balance however with all of your guys help I will be fine.

Looks like too much heat. Try 3 coals to start for like 3-4 min then remove one.

Or Use 2 + wind cover to start, for like 2min then move the coals around and place the wind cover on again for another 2min then leave the cover off.

I've personally never found wind to be a problem(I bought it to help with ashes being thrown around by the wind). I only use it to control any flying ashes on windy days/nights and as a replacement for 1 coal

i also have found that much air flow will get stuff harsh. if i smoke in my living room everything is ok but if i try to smoke in my room where i have 2 huge air vents and a fan on i cannot get it to smoke well cause the coals are always getting blown on and if i wrap the whole top of the hookah up in foil it just doesnt block it well and keeps in too much heat

you will probably get better results if you leave a bit larger of a gap under the foil
