Unhappy Tangiers Packing Trouble

So...I can't seen to get the tangiers packing technique right.
ive watched a lot of videos on it and I've tried it a number of times
but no matter what i do i still manage to burn the tobacco.
First off I start by mixing around my shisha,
then I pack the bowl using a regular fork leaving the shisha
about an 8th of an inch above the rim.
Then comes the foil test, i hold the bowl in my hand
while I compress the shisha down into the bowl,
making sure there is little to no indentation of the middle spire
I lift up the foil, putting it tight over the bowl and poke my wholes with the same fork I used to pack the bowl,
I put holes everywhere except in the middle.
I use 3 coconaras on a medium caravan phunnel bowl and I can't help but get harshness.
I'm pretty sure it's acclimated right. I left it on foil for about 26 hours
until it had no soy sauce/bbq smell. I take off the foil and its all stuck to the foil and burnt .
Am I doing anything wrong?
I need some pointers because im a noob to the Tangiers world lol
Thanks.

Here's what you do. You take the Tangiers you have and throw it in the trash. Sit and reflect at the money spent for bad tobacco. Then you load up a bowl of something good, reflect that good tobacco needs no acclimation, and enjoy your smoke.

I have a sample of Tangiers that I have been acclimating in a ziplock bag for a month. It smells like baby wipes so I have been waiting on trying it.

Here is my suggestion after you load your bowl up take your fork or finger or whatever you want and go around the outside of the bowl pushing it down so its just below the the rim. Then do the same thing only this time go around the spire till its the height of the spire. Even out and bad parts. Using HD foil make it as tight as you can, should not be touching the shisha if you have packed it correct. The using either duct tape or electrical tape use a long enough piece to go around the neck of the bowl as tight as you can. Then with a tooth pick and not a fork go around the outer edge making tiny holes with just the point, then 2 inner circles except drive the tooth pick all the way to the bottom. TEST put you mouth on the bottom of the bowl if air flows thru extremely easy you have succeeded. Light your coals and away you go.

Don't throw it away man, lol. I usually use two coconara coals oh a medium tangiers phunnel. Now this might seem like its not enough but let your tobacco warm up for about 10 mins before taking a pull with the coals on it. Also punch a hole in the middle as this will help you get a better drag. The other thing that i do and it works beautifully for me is i pack the bowl using my hand and not a fork, i find it easier to get the shisha level right when i pack it buy hand vs using a fork and then smashing the tobacco down with the foil. I am a huge tangiers fan and have tried many of their flavors with great success.

Can't have a Tangiers thread without the haters.

I would recommend purchasing an Alien Mini, or a Crown bowl, because I maybe had a 50/50 chance of a smokeable session from the small phunnel.

I'll give it a try.
but with a hole being over the inner spire
you would be getting direct airflow and no heat no?

The hole is generally to "cool" the smoke, mix it with cooler air. Many people swear by it, many people think it's detrimental.

Personally, I just use a toothpick and poke a large amount of holes all the way down to the bottom of the bowl.
One thing I have found with Tangiers here in Utah is that if I leave it out for a couple of hours (after it has been acclimated) in the area I am smoking, I have a 100% success rate. I have compared this to unopened freshly packed tangiers and I always have problems if I do not let it sit. But when I do let it sit... goddamn.

Like Buzz said, use 2 coals instead of 3. Tangiers is really heat sensitive and can be a pain when it comes to heat management...but I've never had a problem with it. Not even once...Just throw 2 coals on with a windcover and let it warm up for a few minutes.

Before you throw it away, you should just send it to me! I'll find a way to make it work

Maybe it's taking so long because you're trying to acclimate in in a ziplock bag, instead of out in the air on a piece of tin foil

Is that the stuff I sent you? It kind of does smell like baby wipes in a way, that's the honey I believe. Or is it more of an alcohol smell?

I recommend watching this video as this is the one that got me packing tangiers properly. If you wanted to smoke tangiers without all the hastle, I would recommend lucid. But anyways, here is the video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WLyeNXDFUY

ok so take all the info you have seen about the "proper" method, file in your mind in the back where you wont look at it again. every time i try anything near the "right" way it is horrid.

i use a vortex to smoke tangiers but get decent results with my small phunnel as well here is what i do.

after it is acclimated (i think it is more letting the flavorings air out and off gas and honestly if it will acclimate i find it does it very fast, nothing over a few hours at most, if it is being finicky you can leave it in the flat ziplock container closed for a while and that seems to help). i mix it up really well and then just grab it with my hands and put it around the bowl, not sprinkle, not packed, put it maybe a bit over the rim and then pack it down with my fingers so there is a good gap, about the level of teh spire on the phunnel and just under it on the vortex (making sure the vortex holes are clear) wipe off the rim and spire and foil it. poke pretty normal size hole NOT all the way down, poked to normal depth. i start with 3 coals hanging off a bit with a wind cover pull the cover once it is going and drop a coal as needed, using 2 for the majority of the bowl.

i pack noir and lucid the same way but find lucid to be a bit easier and it gives less of the tickle (harshness that is there no matter what)
