Default New to hookah. Possible Problems?

when i smoke my hookah and pull off the hose it seems like instead of just the water bubbling or whatever the bowl on top is taking air through the hookah. And it like makes a rattling noise between the bowl and tin foil.
And another problem when im done smoking and take the bowl off, there is a little bit of brown water that falls from where the gromet for the bowl is. I think these 2 problems relate to eachother. Any help on fixing these would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like a few things are wrong with your setup
sounds like you may be adding too much water or purging it too hard.
also your foil should be on fairly tight and your bowl should be on top of a grommet that is thick enough for a tight fit.

You may have to tell us more about your set up if this is not the solution

purging is when you blow into the hookah to clear harsh or stale smoke, if you blow too hard water can go up the stem, if you have the perfect water level and blow into the hookah steady but not hard water should never leave your vase.

getting the foil on tight takes a little practice, my technique is to lay the foil over the bowl centered in the middle. then i make a circle the size of the bowl with my hands and wrap the entire thing in one shot with a slight twist of the foil around the stem of the bowl.
When i was getting started i tore plenty of foil

purging is when you blow air from your lungs back through the hose into the hookah. your hookah (most likely) has a small "stem" with a screw-on cap, near the hose port with a ball bearing resting inside (purge valve). when you blow, the ball bearing will lift up and allow you to clear air and smoke from the base. if you blow way too hard (or if your purge valve gets stuck closed), you can actually force water back up the main stem, creating a horrible volcano.

with the foil, practice makes perfect. set the bowl upright on a sturdy, flat surface and use both hands to evenly smooth the foil over the lip of the bowl, pulling down around the edges and pressing the foil onto the outside of the bowl. i like to use a big enough piece of foil that i have at least 2" off each side of the bowl. use just enough pressure to get a tight seal, but not so much that your foil rips. then take either your palm or a couple fingers and run it around the rim of the bowl, pressing hard to make a nice smooth seal. also, try using either 2 layers of regular foil or a good heavy duty foil. while we're at it, never use "non-stick" foil; it has chemicals not good for smoking. if you're still uncertain after a couple tries, watch one of the many videos that members have made about packing a bowl.

if you don't have a grommet, definitely get one. they're cheap, easy to use, and last a long time. in a pinch, you can use several layers of foil wrapped slightly loose around the cone at the top of the hookah so that when you press the bowl on the foil will compress and give you a workable seal, but this is much more work and not guaranteed to give you as good a seal as a well fitted grommet.

I think we could help more if you explain your setup. I.E. Hookah, bowl, coals and more specific to your problem your water level as it pertains to you downstem, like how many inches is the downstem emerged in the water.

yes deff hit us up with some pictures so we can help accurately help you.

Also the foil problem, you just need to make it tighter.

Brown water problem, may be because you are purging to hard, or it may just be some juices running down the bowl from your tobacco.

Buy definitely get us some pictures to help you better.

yeah i'm not sure what your saying on the foil thing but the brown liquid on the grommit is most likely the juices from the shisha, i get it all the time when i use a really wet tobacco and a standard bowl, get a vortex or phunnel and that wont happen

I don't think he is talking about actual water.

The brown liquid you are talking about is probably just molasses from the tobacco dripping through the bowl.

If it's a large hookah the rattle could be a fairly common occurrence. KM hookahs are known to rattle and vibrate when you draw.

I don't know about the rattling but the brown stuff on the grommet is most likely juices from the tobacco this happens to be every now and then when I use my Egyptian bowl

nothing really wrong with your setup i think..just puzzled on the rattling part..maybe if we had more details on how you setup your hookah that would help us get a better picture of wat your doing wrong..but as of now everything seems normal..and that liquid that's on your grommet is really just tobacco juices.

i think your brown liquid is just the juices flowing down from the tobacco. the rattling is normal if you do now poke the right amount of holes in the foil. you could always buy a metal screen and this would go away. you might also be filling the vase with two much water. if your getting an air leak find out where it is coming from. if you cant. buy another hookah.

you could either try a new bowl wiith out holes on the bottom because there may be a reason that the juice from the tobacco is falling through or you could try new gromets
