Some people say it makes a difference, some people say it doesn't... out of habit I always do shiny toward shisha.

Yea out of habit and what I've learned is the shiny side is what retains the heat better, whether or not there's truth to it I don't know. But I always go shiny side down.

I had always put shiny side down out of habit, but i wouldn't be able to give people a reason why i did it when they asked. Now i can prove there is a method to my madness. lol

Same here. I don't think I've ever tried it without the shiny side down so I don't know if it really makes a difference or not.

I've always had mine Shiny Side Down just because I like the way it looks better, not really because it may or may not work better.

While Chris on the other hand likes it Shiny side up because he likes the "SHINY! OHH AHH PRETTY!"

I wear it on my head so the satelite can't read my thoughts

I also put it shiny side down, but I have no scientific explanation as to why

I've always put it shiny side down, just because I thought it kept in the heat better. Now that I think of it... if this is true couldn't you just put it shiny side up to keep a finicky shisha from getting too hot? ahh ha!

It doesnt make a difference but i put shiny side down out of habit and no reason. You should try both ways and see how the shisha smokes

No difference. I tried this out in a week long experiment. No probes or meters but, to the level that can be perceived by a human, it makes no difference.

I work in the food industry (Arby's lol) and when we cover our baked potatoes with aluminum foil, we put it shiny side toward the potato because it keeps the heat in. That's the whole point about the shiny side. It reflects heat, so naturally I put the shiny side toward the shisha so it keep the heat inside the bowl. Hope this helps and happy smoking!

+1 regarding keeping the heat towards food (shisha). Works well for me, but I've never tried it the other way.

When it comes to heat transfer, "shiny" only effects the radiative third (least significant) of the equation. Conductive and convective heat transfer should account for 95-99% of the heat in your hookah head. I can't believe that a potential gain or loss of 1-5% heat can effect the tobacco cooking process in a way noticeable to the smoker.
That said, setting up the hookah is somewhat of a tradition, a process of lovingly followed procedures to achieve the perfect results. Some people believe these results are
improved by putting the shiny side down, and who am I to tell them they are wrong. I can't tell the difference either way.
I generally use 2 layers of regular foil rather than HD. I take 1 rectangle strip and fold it in half, giving me one shiny side up and one down. If there is a "correct" way to do it, i've got both all in 1 setup without trying or thinking about it (i guess if i fold it with shiny sides facing each other i've got neither... but i really don't think it matters).

I don't. Of course, I don't use heavy duty foil, either. Whatever works for you.

both for cooking and for my hookah I use it shiny side down. The theory is that the shiny side reflects heat more readily than the dull side. It works for cooking sooooo . . . Smoke happy.
