Default Yuck in the base

Anyone ever have what looks like little black specs floating around in the water when you go to dump out the base after a session?
What the heck is that? Where does it come from? Im using a Phunnel so as far as I know nothing is falling through the stem.
My stem looks visually perfect, I keep it fairly clean(not perfect about it, but i give it a good cleaning about once a week and a rinse a few times in between)

Pretty standard set up, KM, coconara coals, nammor hose, quad windcover.
various tobaccos

everything tastes fine, smokes fine, just wondering why all of a sudden there is black specs in my base

That's strange and I wish I could help. Hopefully your hookah isn't rusting but I highly doubt that because it's a KM and I'm sure you keep good care of it I hope someone has the answer for you!

It's probably small bits of ash that get through the foil. Sometimes it can make its way into the base even when using a phunnel/vortex bowl.

Oh you could try making smaller holes in the foil next time you smoke so less ash can get through and see if that helps.

Sounds like an episode of mythbusters waiting to happen lol ”Does ash float or sink?”

Jokes aside, in my experience there are only a few things that end up in the base at the end of a session.

1. Small pieces of tobacco
2. Moassel juice
3. Residual particles built up in the stem
4. Ash

If you are using a phunnel/vortex the first two are unlikely. So that leaves the last two and if your pipe is relatively clean that leaves ash. I’m not sure if ash sinks or swims to be honest but to control the variables before your next smoke, try cleaning the stem with a stem brush and make smaller holes in the foil to reduce the amount of ash that could get through. If still have the particles in the water take the pipe to the hookah doctor lol.

Hope that helps.

it's ash, even with a phunnel or vortex you can pull little bits of is down into the base. and it does sink.

yeah i've had the same thing happen w/my vortex using really finely cut tobacco like HH or HF after it cooks off th moisture it becomes dry & some of the smaller bits can move around in your bowl which are likely to get sucked down into the base, so it's likely both tobacco & ash

had the same problem. to big of holes and a few specs like that got in the base. use a smaller hole puncher and make the holes small but make sure you get a lot of them otherwise the heat wont get threw as easy hope this helps

maybe its battery acid. sometimes i get little chunky residue in my vase even when using a phunnel bowl, but batteries just taste so damn good. massive clouds, too.

this is the juice of the tobaco
if its floats and smell like tobacco its the juice so you need to put lukewarm water inside the base with citric salt and wait 20 minutes
do this 2-3 times then clean the base well and its done

LOL.

It's ash that absorbs water I'd imagine. Nothing to be concerned about. When you rinse out your stem, the same stuff will likely come out.

Maybe mold? I had this happen once to my QT base. I saw these things floating and then i noticed mold in around the bottom of the base. Then i broke the base as I tried to kill the mold.

do you poke a hole in the middle of the foil on you funnel bowl? that could be how the ash could be getting down the stem in the water. could also be some burnt specks of tobacco sucked down the stem. dunno man.

I would have to agree that it is just ash. I would not be concerned.
