Lightbulb Stupid question on proper windcover usage!!

I'm new to the whole windcover thing but my question is as follows. What is the correct way to use them during your session of smoking? The reason I ask is that I'm trying to reduce the coal usage that I using while smoking inside my house and wanted to see what tips you guys may have. Thanks again

Most of the time, you use the windcover to get your bowl started. Say you have a regular egyptian bowl, take 1 coal and a windcover to get it started. Once the smoke comes out nice and thick and it's "smoked in", take the windcover off and you should be good.

I love/need my windcover! I use it not so much to get the smoke going but to adjust the intensity of smoke and flavor. Depending on the tobacco I may go 10 minutes uncovered then 3-5 minutes covered to bounce the heat back up. I hope this has helped and as ariberns has said, this is not a stupid question

I also use my wind cover to get the bowl started, and it works like a charm, of course. But if you're ever smoking outside, they also just really help by being...well...just a wind cover, haha! Surprisingly so. And also, I've had hookah/bowl/tobacco combos that where pretty stubborn with heat, and leaving a windcover on the whole time helped to keep the temperature steady,if you ever run into that problem.

Look out with the windcover though.. your tobacco will burn much faster, and before you know, it's burnt and you get harsh smoke.

Look at it like an extra coal.

I'm wondering, which will give better heat: Windcover and one coal, or two coals?
When I use windcover, the whole bowl gets hot (also the bottom of the bowl), and with two coals it gets less hot.

But the wind cover doesn't cost you money every time you use it. lol

Probably subjective based on the coals. Two Golden QLs straight will scorch my shisha in a vortex bowl (I can audibly hear it boiling from a few feet away), whereas a 1+WC will not.

Looks like you got all the responses i was going to say. (: Don't mean to thread jack but what windcover does everyone use on their KMs? I don't really feel like shelling out $25 for that quad metal one.

H-S has the basic tall wind cover. I just picked one up during their 20% off discount. It's great and works on my KM with a small funnel. They are much cheaper than the quad metal and don't suffer from the discoloration problems.

I've made my own windcovers. For my small Mya bowl I use a simple soup can that is thoroughly cleaned, then drilled with 5 3/8" holes around the perimeter of the top of the can. Also drill three to four 3/8" holes down into the top of the can. A handle can be attached by simply soldering a small braid or twist of two or three wires and shaped to your liking, then paint the external surface with high temp paint to decorate it however you want. For my larger bowls a small, 11.5 oz coffee can does the same thing. Just add a few more holes around the perimeter of the top of the can and a few more in the top as well to allow for adequate ventilation and you've not only made a nice windscreen but you've recycled! Whooo hoooooo . . . green screens . . . hmmm maybe there's a silly marketing idea there! Smoke happy.

With me, it honestly depends on the setup I have at the time. With my 11" Havana pumpkin hookah, I have a small mod bowl and use one Holland QL and leave the windcover on the whole time. This way I only need one coal on a quarter of the bowl to smoke a full 45min session and I can always remove the coal when it goes out and add a new coal to the next bowl quater. GIving me 4, 45min sessions.
With my 22in mod with a vortex though, I pretty much just use it as part of my heat management. I set up with 3 coconaras and place the cover on to get it started.

It's all personal prefference, just play around with it until you like it.

Happy Smoking,
Quix.

There are no stupid questions.

There's a lot of responses already, but for what it's worth, here's what I do. I use my wind cover when I'm smoking outside to keep the breeze from burning my coals too fast. But, since a wind cover also amplifies heat, indoors I use first thing to get the bowl started. Maybe 1 - 2 minutes. As soon as the smoke is thick, I remove the wind cover and immediately take 2 - 3 hits. Then I let it rest a little and resume smoking at a normal rate. Once the coals burn down to about 50%, I replace the wind cover to make up for the heat that's since dissipated.

When I'm indoors, unless I'm near an air conditioner or an open window with a cross-breeze, I don't use the wind cover. If you use a wind cover to try and use fewer coals, you're still going to be stuck with a shorter session. Because, say you want to only use 2 coals on a standard phunnel bowl, once those coals have burned down half way, even with the wind cover, there probably won't be enough heat to keep it smoking satisfactorily. Once they burn down you'll still need that third coal.

I think the best way to use fewer coals is to use a small bowl that doesn't require so much heat. Maybe a small mya bowl or something. Or, my recommendation is the new Mini Alien bowl which only needs two coals without the wind cover, then when it's added later to recover your heat, it continues smoking as you'd want.

Okay. Maybe there are some stupid questions. But I'm having difficulty thinking up questions that I would really consider stupid for someone to ask--especially if they were new and really didn't know. Hmmm. That might make for a funny thread.

That would be funny, this could be an example:
Anyone know the number for 911?
How often do roosters lay eggs?
ect.
