Default Home made coals safe?

So i bought a huge bag of AF natural coals, and they are not your perfect cube nat coals. They are pretty much completely random size and shapes of chunks of wooden coals. The bag says lemon wood. So I was curious if I am outside by a campfire, can i just take small coals from the fire and use them, or is there a health hazard in doing so?

I believe someone asked this about a week ago and the main understanding was as long as its not a coal from treated wood with any bad things in it, it should be safe. Besides how do you think they did it a hundred years ago?

My thoughts exactly. Just don't ever ever ever use charcoal. HA.

It works if the wood is all natural
but the coals with ash really fast and they don't last as long as normal hookah coals

You could definitely do this, hell you could make some REALLY good homemade charcoal, just get some good wood. There's a lot of wood that gives off poisonous/hazardous fumes so don't use those.

Hardwood from a non-toxic tree only.
Natural with no chemical treatments.
Make sure that you know both of these to be absolutely true

The glowing red in a fire is an ember and will ash away to nothing in short order.
You can make actual charcoal by depriving wood of oxygen and cooking it for a very long time to carbonize it. If you are using natural, lump hardwood charcoal in your fires then you can use that quite effectively.

If you use home made coals from natural wood or something, more shit will come of when litting them/smoking with those than normal nats I think.. Things you don't want to inhale.
Animals/insects probably have peed/shit on them more than once!

using hot coals from a fire definitely works... but as others have said, it becomes this ridiculous heat management juggling event. you can basically cover the top of the bowl with hot coals and smoke just fine... but they'll be completely dead in 3-5 minutes, throw those back in and start over, every 3-5 minutes. it's just not relaxing at all. i've even tried using the "natural, lump hardwood charcoal" that i grill with. it works, without odd flavor/odor, but they just don't last.

i would not, however, worry about multiple insects having peed on them... fire is a pretty good cleanser

Unless you are making them in very large quantities it usually costs more in fuel than it would for an equal amount of coal. I've considered it in the past lol. i'm a do-it-yourself kinda guy.

I guess that is true. I never really thought about it but you are right. That's the way that companies offer such low prices. They work in large quantities and buy in bulk to reduce initial costs. The most expensive part of making charcoal is the fuel like propane. If you want you can get wood for free on craigslist so long as you live in an area that people burn wood on a semi-regular basis. So long as you have a gas grill after that it's mostly the cost of propane after that.

i think you could so something like this, but in smaller quantities using a good heavy (cheap) *** [or whatever metal container you can find that will withstand the heat and maintain a pretty decent seal] and a single electric burner

Very much this.

We hear horror stories once in a while about people using briquettes and hurting themselves. One guy posted a long time ago about ending up in the hospital because of that if I remember correctly.
