Alright, so i'm not an often hookah smoker. but when i do it i always get bad sessions:

i use a mya qt
small nammor hose
starlight coals (grey color shaped like a box)
water in the base
one layer of heavy duty foil

clouds are a must for me. but my problem is when i smoke i get small clouds and gets very harsh.

any tips and advice? ... thanks

How many holes? big holes or small holes? how high up are you filling the base with water? are you cleaning everything on a semi-regular basis? all these can determine the quality of a session.

Allan is right, to many coals could be a possibility, or maybe you aren't moving them around enough.

also dont put the coals in the middle of the head it will burn straight through the tobacco and your session can be cut really short. Make sure the coal are on the sides of the bowl and rotate them every 10 min or so and also flip them.

Yeah, you say "Starlight coals"... Are you using more than once at once? Does it behave the same way w/ just a single one dancing around every 10-15min?

Also, the MYA bowl is relatively deep so if its packed too dense, it may be coaxing you to draw harder, which may be pulling significant quantities of coal ash into the bowl. I know I was doing that when I first got my MYA...

make sure you're using fresh tobacco, red and hot coals and enough holes in your foil.

dry tobaccos dont make much clouds and gets too hard easily.
nakhla is almost dry, but some lines like Mizo are a little moist

if your getting harsh smoke, your not cooking your tobacco, your burning it

that mya bowl is rough to heat manage, you get a very deep carbon line on it, deeper than any other bowl i have ever seen
the tobacco needs to be packed below that line, if you do not have the line yet, you need to leave a large gap between the tobacco and the foil, its about two and a half times the gap of most other bowls.
for most tobaccos you should put 3 fully lit coals on and simply let them sit there for 5 minutes without you smoking it
after 5 minutes pass take a coal off and rotate the remaining two
the coals should be hanging off the edge of the mya bowl
if you do not get smoke fairly quickly with this method you may have to wait up to 10 minutes before smoking as the tobacco may be cooking slow since it is so far from the foil
if this fails get a vortex, its easy to heat manage
a phunnel is great but a challenge especially a large one

make sure you let the coals cook. placing the starlights on too early can give that nasty coal/gunpowder taste. otherwise it sounds as if youre having heat management issues. place coals at the rim of the bowl if need be as well.
As allan said, you may have too many on there. Your rig is not that big so you should only be cooking the shisha inside.

Maybe i missed this but what brand of shisha are you using? not all brands give huge clouds, cloud size differs with each different brand

Okay i'll just re-state what my set-up was and what I was doing:

Mya QT, Small Nammor, Starlight Coals, Standard MYA boal, water in the base, Nakhla Strawberry, 1 layer of heavy duty foil

I punched small holes in a circular pattern in the bowl, and i placed two starlight coals on opposite ends (is that too much?) I let it sit for about 5-6 minutes, gave a couple pulls and I was getting little to no smoke and it got harsh very fast, I moved the coals around but I just made it worse.

Should I use my phunnel bowl instead next time? I'm sort of new to this stuff and have little clue on how to manage my heat.

Nahkla isnt known to give "monster clouds"
You need something with more glycerin ie SB, SS, HH, Tangiers, etc
Also try getting a vortex bowl. Much easier to heat manage and hardly ever gives bad session
Also invest in a windcover
Try 1 coal split in half. Correct me if Im wrong but it sounds like the bowl you have is quite tiny and youre using too much heat and burning it

the Mya bowl that comes with the QT is not tiny, its just shaped in a way that you have to really have alot of patience because you have to pack it so differently. Not only can the tobacco not touch the foil but its needs about 3 times the space you would normally have.
Being so far away from the foil makes it tough to get it started. You should start with 2 coals, and let it sit there untouched for as much as 10 minutes, then drop a coal, move the remaining coal and give it a go. add heat if you can, remove it the second you get even a tickle.

i'am agree with that

i use somme little hookah call "pumpkin" with nakhla tobacco and I have a lot of cloud.

with AF tobacco i have, with the same hookah, decent cloud but not so huge as with nakhla.

so I don't think the problem come from the tobacco brand, but from the hookah set up.

that is the exact setup i use, your getting harsh clouds because your using to many coals, the MYA bowl it comes with is really a 1 coal bowl, if your using more than 1 coal thats the problem

also definately use your phunnel bowl, i use mine and i use the same exact coals as you, you can get 3 coals on it without it being harsh, if it does get harsh just put two, and also make sure you mix up your tobacco so its nice and moist

Yeah, the Social Smoke Rave is a 11" chinese hookah. Called a pumpkin because the base looks like a pumpkin.
