Default holes in that are punched close to the rim are bad ?

well my friend who came back from the lebanon told me that his uncle has been smoking for 30 years or so. Point of the story is ,he told him the best way to poke holes is to poke holes in the middle ,and make them very small ,and none arond the rim or it burns the tobbaco faster ?

any truth to this .Its not the first time i have heard this but never took it to heart. im not exact on details or anything
just like to know everyones thoughts ?

Never heard of this, I always punch the outer circle really close to the rim and always start with my coals hanging on the rim, never burnt the tobacco, and the sessions always last well over an hour.

Punching holes near the rim hasn't really made a difference for me...but I haven't really observed. I'll give it a try.

I've been told that same thing before. I tried it once, and I had to use more coals to get the same results I usually get, but I didn't have to move them as much. I didn't really prefer it, but that's not to say other people don't or can't.

I only keep the holes away from the rim on my Crown Classic bowl. The holes in the bowl are on the rim and poking holes in the foil near creates too much air flow for my taste.

i can see how that would burn the pack, but i like it to heat up the bowl so i do four holes just on the edge of the rim so you can even see the bowl and start the coals at those points and move in. also those four hole s end up lifting the foil in the center when you inhale so a win win i think..
but ya to many hole could be bad

heat will travel in a vircular pattern, if you put the coals in the middle it will heat everything around it creating more heat. You get less heat from the edges, this is simple physics.
Your less likely to burn your tobacco from the edges. I sometimes move my coal to the middle on a standard egyptian as they begin to die down, but this is pointless on a vortex or phunnel

I did read somewhere that you shouldn't punch holes within 1/4 inch of the rim of the bowl. I, for one, however, haven't adhered to that statement. I punch holes all the way to the edge of the rim and haven't suffered any burn problems or air flow problems resulting from it. However, I'm gonna try just doing a smaller series of holes nearer to the center to see how it works. For me, I try to punch enough holes to get the desired air flow for smooth draws. I don't really think that the placement of the holes really makes a huge difference in the heat management as the heat will penetrate the foil as it heats up from the coals placed atop it whether there are a lot of holes or few. The holes really just facilitate air flow and how it will draw through the moassel. Smoke happy.

I've been smoking for years and I have always poked holes right up to the rim and follow by poking 3 more concentric circles all the way to the middle, for a total of 4. Always gives me a great sessions lasting anywhere from 1.5 hours to 2+ in a small phunnel bowl or vortex bowl; I've never had issues doing it this way. Tiny holes poked with a needle are the best in my experience.

As far as burning tobacco, that'll only happen if you pack the tobacco too high so it is in direct contact with the foil and thus the coals.
